The disruption to international travel caused by the Middle East conflict also hit sales of travel-related goods.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Sarah Bradbury, chief executive of the IGD (Institute for Grocery Distribution), said: \u201cThe conflict in the Middle East is having an immediate impact on costs with <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/all-about\/petrol-prices\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"\">petrol prices<\/a> up by around 18% at the pump compared to before the conflict began.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"BRC chief Helen Dickinson\" loading=\"lazy\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/2_Helen-Profile.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p aria-label=\"BRC chief Helen Dickinson issues plea to government to relieve pressure on households \" class=\"ImageCaption_caption-title__ccyQU\" data-testid=\"caption-title\">BRC chief Helen Dickinson issues plea to government to relieve pressure on households (Image: Handout)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cExpectations are that the conflict will continue to increase cost pressures, with rising risks to heating bills, food prices and interest rates. As a result, shopper confidence has dropped to the lowest level since 2023.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">&#8220;While occasions such as Mother\u2019s Day and Eid provided moments of celebration, they were not enough to offset growing shopper concerns about rising costs. The months ahead will therefore be challenging for both shoppers and the food and drink industry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Last month saw the IGD warn the Middle East crisis could add more than \u00a3150 a year to the average family\u2019s grocery bill. It came as it more than doubled its forecast for food inflation this year, from 3.6% to over 8% by June.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The predicted surge would prove another massive blow for millions of families as the weekly shop is already one of the biggest outgoings for many.
