We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.<\/p>\n<p>Your support makes all the difference.Read more<\/p>\n<p>Laura Linney has opened up about her career in a wide-ranging new interview, reflecting on her working relationships with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/arts-entertainment\/tv\/news\/billie-eilish-mark-ruffalo-kevin-oleary-grammys-ice-b2915903.html\" title=\"Mark Ruffalo leads celebrity backlash against Kevin O\u2019Leary after attack on Billie Eilish\u2019s anti-ICE speech\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mark Ruffalo<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/arts-entertainment\/tv\/news\/charli-xcx-moment-jason-bateman-movies-b2912859.html\" title=\"Jason Bateman criticised for questioning Charli XCX\u2019s decision not to have children\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jason Bateman<\/a> \u2013 and the letter she received from Richard Curtis before being cast in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/love-actually\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Love, Actually<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Hollywood actor spoke to The Independent for a brand new series titled <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=fMl2cIX-uUE\">Life in Pictures<\/a>, which invites stars to share intimate behind-the-scenes stories and reflect on their biggest films and most iconic roles.<\/p>\n<p>During the chat, Linney, 62, discussed her roles in You Can Count On Me, which she starred in alongside then-newcomer Ruffalo, Jim Carrey film The Truman Show and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/arts-entertainment\/films\/features\/love-actually-review-why-does-everyone-hate-l-b2469159.html\">festive favourite Love, Actually<\/a> \u2013 and also found time to address one of her most critically maligned credits, which she called \u201cone of the great bad movies\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Congo, released in 1995, was notable for being Linney\u2019s debut lead role, and stands out as being the only action film she\u2019s starred in. Directed by Frank Marshall, and based on a 1980 novel by Michael Crichton, the film follows an expedition team who encounter a violent gorilla species deep in the African jungle. It received seven Golden Raspberry Award nominations, honouring the worst in film.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Screenshot-2026-04-14-at-13-21-53.png\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Laura Linney in \u2018Congo\u2019 \u2013 \u2018I haven\u2019t watched it in so long\u2019\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 ggpMaE\"\/>Laura Linney in \u2018Congo\u2019 \u2013 \u2018I haven\u2019t watched it in so long\u2019 (Paramount)<\/p>\n<p>Linney reflected on the experience fondly, even if she\u2019s under no illusion about its overall quality. \u201cCongo\u2019s one of the great bad movies of our time!\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s a great one. It\u2019s a delightmare. That\u2019s what I call it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She continued: \u201cI haven\u2019t watched it in so long. I\u2019ll go back to it when I\u2019m really old and want to feel good about myself, and be like, \u2018Oh God, I was young. I was sweet \u2013\u00a0look at that. And look at my arms!\u2019 I\u2019ll do that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere in the interview, Linney, who currently stars in sitcom American Classic, opened up about drawing the serious out of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/ozark\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ozark<\/a> co-star Bateman, her friendships with Liam Neeson and Holland Taylor \u2013 and the lessons she\u2019s learnt working with directing maestro Clint Eastwood three times.<\/p>\n<p>Watch the full interview below.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Linney has received three Oscar nominations \u2013 for films You Can Count On Me, Kinsey and The Savages \u2013 and won four Emmys for Wild Iris, Frasier, John Adams and The Big C. She received four nominations for the Netflix series Ozark.<\/p>\n<p>She currently stars in American Classic, a new series about a narcissistic Broadway star (Kevin Kline) who returns to his hometown after a public meltdown and decides to save his family-run theatre.
