(Image credit: NASA\/Keegan Barber)<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-7efd3934-73da-4b50-a24c-ddd16aec530d\">We&#8217;re not the only ones still feeling the joy of NASA&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-2-humans-moon-orbit\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-2-humans-moon-orbit\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-2-humans-moon-orbit\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Artemis 2<\/a> mission.<\/p>\n<p>Mission commander NASA astronaut Reid Wiseman was seen experiencing some serious joy following the mission splashdown. With his fist raised to the sky and his crew and teammates behind him, the excitement of this accomplishment was written all over his face. But one detail stands out \u2014 Rise, the Artemis 2 mission mascot, is securely attached to Reid&#8217;s water bottle.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-7efd3934-73da-4b50-a24c-ddd16aec530d-2\">And it seems like the pair have been inseparable ever since.<\/p>\n<p>Article continues below <\/p>\n<p>            You may like<\/p>\n<p>    <a id=\"elk-700bba5d-81fb-45b3-bac0-7ffb1191e0de\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\"\/>What is it? <\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-dbb304bb-87ef-4bff-99c6-ae12e4013046\">NASA&#8217;s Artemis 2 mission sent four astronauts on a 10-day journey around the moon and back. This historic mission marked the first crewed trip to the moon since the final mission of the Apollo program in 1972.<\/p>\n<p>On Friday (April 10), the astronauts onboard this mission \u2014 NASA&#8217;s Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, and Christina Koch and the Canadian Space Agency&#8217;s Jeremy Hansen \u2014 <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/artemis-2-astronauts-return-to-earth-ending-historic-moon-mission\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/artemis-2-astronauts-return-to-earth-ending-historic-moon-mission\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/artemis-2-astronauts-return-to-earth-ending-historic-moon-mission\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">splashed down<\/a> in the Pacific Ocean.<\/p>\n<p>Following confirmation of a successful and safe splashdown, the crew boarded a recovery ship, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/artemis-2-astronauts-celebrate-successful-return-to-earth-space-photo-of-the-day-for-april-13-2026\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/artemis-2-astronauts-celebrate-successful-return-to-earth-space-photo-of-the-day-for-april-13-2026\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/artemis-2-astronauts-celebrate-successful-return-to-earth-space-photo-of-the-day-for-april-13-2026\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">triumphant and beaming<\/a>. But while walking across the deck of the ship, some pointed out that Wiseman appeared to be carrying a special stowaway: Rise, the mission&#8217;s mascot.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-98349bc6-a62f-4d24-8a47-c0b60c8f8e2e\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\"\/>Why is it incredible? <\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-30a87ad7-ab3c-43b3-ae9e-329f13e08dc2\">It turns out that Wiseman <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/how-artemis-2-commander-reid-wiseman-saved-the-missions-moon-mascot-its-hard-not-to-love-this-little-guy-i-cant-let-rise-out-of-my-sight\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/how-artemis-2-commander-reid-wiseman-saved-the-missions-moon-mascot-its-hard-not-to-love-this-little-guy-i-cant-let-rise-out-of-my-sight\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/how-artemis-2-commander-reid-wiseman-saved-the-missions-moon-mascot-its-hard-not-to-love-this-little-guy-i-cant-let-rise-out-of-my-sight\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">was supposed to leave Rise <\/a>\u2014 a plush moon toy and the mascot of the mission \u2014 behind on the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/27824-orion-spacecraft.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/27824-orion-spacecraft.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/27824-orion-spacecraft.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Orion spacecraft<\/a>. But he just couldn&#8217;t do it, and he brought Rise along for the ride.<\/p>\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">Breaking space news, the latest updates on rocket launches, skywatching events and more!<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I was supposed to leave Rise in Integrity &#8230; but that was not something I was going to do,&#8221; Wiseman <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/astro_reid\/status\/2043029624146505888\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/x.com\/astro_reid\/status\/2043029624146505888\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">wrote on X<\/a> on Saturday (April 11).<\/p>\n<p>Rise was invented by third-grader Lucas Ye as part of a public contest to come up with a mascot that could serve as a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/artemis-2-astronauts-reveal-adorable-zero-g-indicator-rise-space-photo-of-the-day-for-march-31-2026\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/artemis-2-astronauts-reveal-adorable-zero-g-indicator-rise-space-photo-of-the-day-for-march-31-2026\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/artemis-2-astronauts-reveal-adorable-zero-g-indicator-rise-space-photo-of-the-day-for-march-31-2026\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">zero-gravity indicator<\/a>. In other words, the object would need to be used to &#8220;float,&#8221; or visually indicate zero gravity aboard the capsule.<\/p>\n<p>In a heartwarming, additional note of sentimentality, at some point, &#8220;Carroll&#8221; was inscribed on the Ye&#8217;s plush. This is in reference to Wiseman&#8217;s wife Carroll, who died in 2020.
