He became only the fourth golfer in history to achieve a back-to-back Masters<\/a> triumph. Englishman Rose pushed McIlroy close throughout, yet it proved insufficient as the reigning champion pulled clear on the final day. Rose has now made a sudden call following yet another near-miss<\/a> at the sport’s most prestigious major. His decision comes as he reflects on a series of painful moments from the latest edition of the Masters. On Monday, it was confirmed that Rose had pulled out of the RBC Heritage, with Michael Thorbjornsen stepping in to take his place in the field. Wyndham Clark, Billy Horschel, Marco Penge and Tony Finau are sponsor exemptions for the tournament.<\/p>\n

Rose last featured in the tournament in 2025, finishing T42 with a 5-under score. McIlroy, meanwhile, has only appeared in the event twice, in 2020 and 2024, having missed the tournament last year to celebrate his Masters victory. And he made it clear before his most recent triumph that he would be skipping it again.<\/p>\n

For Rose, Sunday represented his fourth top-three finish at Augusta without claiming the Green Jacket, second only to Greg Norman’s six. He finished runner-up in 2015 and 2017, lost the play-off to McIlroy in 2025 and was undone at Amen Corner this year.<\/p>\n

The Augusta patrons gave Rose a warm reception on the 18th, though the star understood that there was more to their cheering than it initially seemed. He said afterwards: “The crowd was amazing to me all week long. They pulled for me all week long. At the end it kind of goes a little flat. It’s more of a sympathy than anything. But it was still nonetheless very beautiful. But, yeah, another little stinger.”<\/p>\n

At 45 years old, Rose would have been the second-oldest player to have won a Green Jacket, behind only Jack Nicklaus’ 1986 win at 46. Furthermore, Rose has led more rounds (nine) and earned more money ($7.6m) than any player who has yet to win the tournament, per Golf Digest<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Despite his advancing age, Rose is not giving up hope on winning the Masters at some point in his career. “You look at Freddy, the way he plays around here. Bernard Langer. The guys get around this golf<\/a> course. It does show this course maybe more than anywhere suits maybe personal style or knowledge or whatever it might be. But, yeah, I hope so,” he concluded.<\/p>\n

The RBC Heritage is scheduled to get under way on April 16.
