We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.<\/p>\n<p>Your support makes all the difference.Read more<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/americas\/us-politics\/trump-ice-reddit-grand-jury-b2956171.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Trump administration<\/a> is renewing its focus on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/americas\/nuclear-reactor-moon-trump-nasa-sean-duffy-b2802100.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">creating nuclear power in space<\/a>, releasing updated <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/NSTM-3-2026_04_14-corrected.pdf\">guidance<\/a> for federal agencies following the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/space\/navy-artemis-nasa-astronauts-moon-splashdown-b2957376.html\">historic Artemis II lunar mission<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>The action is aimed at ensuring the U.S. stays ahead of <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/americas\/us-politics\/trump-son-eric-china-state-visit-biden-b2957509.html\">China<\/a> in <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-affiliate=\"true\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/go.redirectingat.com\/?id=44681X1458326&amp;xcust=b2957498&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nytimes.com%2F2026%2F04%2F10%2Fscience%2Fmoon-astronauts-success.html&amp;sref=\/space\/us-nasa-space-nuclear-power-b2957498.html\">the new space race<\/a>, which will determine which political power creates the rules there in the future, as humans establish a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/news-release\/nasa-unveils-initiatives-to-achieve-americas-national-space-policy\/\">permanent moon base<\/a> and work toward getting to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/space\/mars-red-planet-color-esa-b2704767.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mars<\/a> in <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/america-underway-in-space-on-nuclear-power.pdf?emrc=69c30166df2f7\">a nuclear-powered spacecraft<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Nuclear energy will be necessary to live and work on the moon because there is not unlimited access to solar power and lunar nights are 14.5 Earth days long. Nuclear reactors can be placed in permanently shadowed areas and can generate power continuously, according to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/centers-and-facilities\/glenn\/nasas-fission-surface-power-project-energizes-lunar-exploration\/\">NASA<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The administration\u2019s guidance, issued Tuesday, instructs the Departments of Energy and Defense, the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy and NASA to start taking steps toward safely deploying nuclear reactors in orbit as early as 2028 and launching them to the moon by 2030, in line with a December executive order from <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/americas\/us-politics\/trump-mental-health-narcissism-iran-b2956890.html\">President Donald Trump<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe time has come for America to get underway on nuclear power in space,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/space\/nasa-astronauts-moon-artemis-b2955995.html\">NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman<\/a>, a former SpaceX astronaut, wrote in a <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/NASAAdmin\/status\/2044056202045477261\">post<\/a> sharing the news on the social media platform X.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/art002e009285~large.jpeg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"The Earth is seen behind the moon in this image captured by the Artemis II crew. After the success of the historic lunar flyby, the Trump administration is setting plans in motion for lunar nuclear reactors (NASA)<\/p>\n<p>The guidance says that NASA and the Department of Defense should create design competitions to enable \u201cnear-term demonstration\u201d of the \u201clow- to mid-power space reactor,\u201d preparing to deploy high-power reactors in the next decade. <\/p>\n<p>Within the next month, the administration instructs NASA to initiate a program to develop the reactor with <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/centers-and-facilities\/glenn\/nasas-fission-surface-power-project-energizes-lunar-exploration\/\">fission surface power<\/a> \u2013 which provides at least 40 kilowatts of continuous, reliable electricity on the moon \u2013 as well as prepare an option for demonstration that works using <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/centers-and-facilities\/langley\/nuclear-electric-propulsion-technology-could-make-missions-to-mars-faster\/\">nuclear electric propulsion<\/a>: tech that uses the reactor to generate electricity and provide thrust for spacecrafts. <\/p>\n<p>By the next 60 days, it calls for a Department of Energy assessment on the readiness of the nuclear industry to produce \u201cup to four space reactors within five years, including reactor design, delivery of long lead-time components, and fuel allocation or production, along with recommendations for addressing any gaps.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/REACTORS.jpeg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"This NASA concept image shows nuclear reactors on the surface of the moon, next to the Earth and Mars.
