I watched every minute of the Masters (big shout out to the super commentary from Andrew Coltart at Sky; his infectious enthusiasm shone out of every session). I woke early, got my work out of the way and then marinaded in a tournament that seems about so much more than golf but rather part of the drumbeat of life. I first watched the Masters when Jack Nicklaus won his famous sixth title and stayed late into the night for Sandy Lyle, Nick Faldo’s triumphs, Greg Norman’s collapse, Tiger’s chip on 16 and last year’s epic.

Well, actually last year I was on a boat floating down the Mekong River in Vietnam, part of an Easter treat for the kids, which was magnificent, but there was no TV showing the golf. Calamity! I would happily have stayed up to watch the showdown between Rory McIlroy and Justin Rose, but had to make do with waking abruptly at 4am local time and relying on internet updates. The next day I was moved beyond words by Rose’s warmth in defeat, that handshake for his friend. What a good golfer and great man. He came mightily close again this time.

This year was, if anything, even more emotional. The golf had it all (as it always does): great shots, ebbs and flows, people moving up and down the leaderboard and, in McIlroy, a player whose accuracy off the tee was all over the place but whose inventiveness was capable of retrieving almost any situation from disaster. Again, he led by a mile but had to dig deep to hold on in a crucial inward nine, making birdies at key moments.

And then the presentation ceremony. Oh my. From the moment McIlroy started to speak you could feel the weight within. He knew where the speech was leading and was already struggling to hold it together. This wasn’t about anything as trivial as golf; it was about two people who had missed his triumph last year but who were greenside this time. Rosie and Gerry. Mum and Dad.

“You’re the most wonderful parents. And if I can be half the parent to Poppy that you were to me then I know I’ve done a good job.”

Rory McIlroy thanks his mom and dad after his thrilling Masters win pic.twitter.com/c8XrUneaFk

— Golf on CBS ⛳ (@GolfonCBS) April 12, 2026

So much coverage in sport is about pushy parents. It makes for explosive copy. Jennifer Capriati’s crazy dad. The bearded father who used to scream at Jelena Dokic. It seems there is an almost insatiable appetite to hear about mums and dads bawling out their little ones, forcing them to play so much that their hands bleed, turning young lives into a kind of hell. I still receive letters from the parents of young prodigies wondering if this is the right template to bring up their little Mozarts. Do I need to be overbearing? Is this what works in elite sport?

Err, not really. Most parents of superstars are not like this at all, but such people rarely get mentioned because it doesn’t make for rip-roaring copy. People such as Gerry and Rosie, a working-class mum and dad from Northern Ireland whose little boy seemed to hit a golf ball rather well and who quietly worked all hours so he could pursue his ambition. “I was never pushed into it in any way. If anything, it was the other way around,” Rory has said. “It was always my dream.”

McIlroy with his father, Gerry Simon Bruty/Getty Images

Only McIlroy knows how often they were there for him, how they picked him up when he was down; how mum worked night shifts at a factory when he needed the funds to play in tournaments far from home; how his dad cleaned showers in addition to his day job because little Rory needed lessons with the local pro; how this was never a burden but the greatest privilege of any parent: to make sacrifices for the kids you brought into the world and who now light it up.

Rory broke down as he turned to look at his parents: it was almost Shakespearean that he couldn’t use the word “thanks”, despite trying, realising that a single syllable couldn’t do justice to the enormity of what he wished to say. “Oh, mum and dad,” he mumbled, and again his mouth wouldn’t work as he confronted the inarticulacy of language itself. I thought of Franz Kafka’s great line: “I am constantly trying to communicate something incommunicable.” In the end, he managed: “I owe everything to you,” as the tears flowed.

I thought of the occasion when Roger Federer was asked in a press conference about the role of his parents. Rodge is not the most loquacious at the best of times but he just nodded and smiled. It was enough. His face told the story: they were always there, always present; never living through him but always there for him, a small difference grammatically but everything in terms of lived experience. At his 2024 Dartmouth commencement speech, he credited his parents for having “always supported” and “encouraged” him, and for “always understanding what I most wanted and needed to be”.

Rosie and Gerry were supportive but never overbearingDavid Cannon/R&A/getty images

I must also mention the lovely piece about David Wilkie by my colleague Craig Lord. Wilkie won 200m breaststroke gold at the 1976 Olympics in a time of 2min 15.11sec. Adam, his son, is now beginning a quest to achieve that time, not because he’s a good swimmer — he is 33 and works in marketing — but as a homage to his beloved father, who died from cancer two years ago, and to raise money for charity. “When Dad died, I felt a deep need to honour him in some way,” Adam said. “I felt I needed to do something that was tangible and felt big, meaningful.”

Parenting is perhaps the greatest challenge and privilege of life. Most of us try hard, do our best, seeking that elusive balance between encouraging our kids without pressuring them. I remember talking to Andre Agassi about his dad, an immigrant who thought he was doing the right thing by his son by building a tennis court in the garden with a machine that fired balls at him. Too gruelling? Too oppressive? Or was it, as Agassi admitted with no small degree of emotion, the action of a man doing his level best — and, at times, getting it wrong?

My parents got the balance exactly right, and my gratitude transcends what words can carry. But I can’t help feeling we need to hear more of these stories. My answer in future when I receive letters asking for parenting advice will be to watch that presentation ceremony at Augusta, a gracious and decent man — who happens to be a good golfer — paying tribute to parents who would have loved him just as much if he had lost; indeed, had he never played golf at all.

This is parenting, one of the greatest and most precious things in the world.

OK, I admit it.
