As part of the government’s new Simpler Recycling plan, £78 billion has been allocated to help councils roll out new weekly food waste collections.

To accommodate this households are expected to receive new bins for food waste. One will be a small caddy that can be placed in the kitchen and another large bin for outside.

However, 79 councils, the equivalent of around one in four councils, did not meet the March 31 deadline for the new bins, according to a BBC investigation.

The BBC has provided a searchable database, which shows that Oldham will not be fully implementing the new rules until 2034.

This is because Oldham is one of the 31 councils to have reached transitional agreements with the government to push back the start date due to “area-specific delivery challenges”.

As the council has reached this agreement, it is not counted among the 57 councils that have missed the March 31 deadline.

What is the Simpler Recycling plan?

Under the plan introduced on March 31, the following four waste categories must be collected separately: food and garden waste, paper and card, all other dry recyclable materials (glass, metal and plastic, including cartons) and residual waste (non-recyclable waste that is sent for energy recovery or to landfill).

Circular Economy Minister Mary Creagh said: “We are ending the bin collections postcode lottery and making it easier for people to recycle wherever they live.

“Simplifying these rules will cut out carbon, clean up our streets, and help bring pride back into our communities.

“We will continue to work hand-in-hand with local areas to deliver these changes and ensure there’s more recycled content in the products we buy.”

A full breakdown of the new recycling rules is available on the government website.

A council spokesperson said: “Oldham Council has a transitional agreement with a start date of 2034. However, the vast majority of households already receive weekly food waste collections.”

As part of the government’s new Simpler Recycling plan, £78 billion has been allocated to help councils roll…

[22
1397,90,56,54,55
post-534090","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-environment","tag-environment","tag-science","tag-uk","tag-united-kingdom","tag-unitedkingdom
["GET
