{"id":534359,"date":"2026-04-16T16:04:09","date_gmt":"2026-04-16T16:04:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/534359\/"},"modified":"2026-04-16T16:04:09","modified_gmt":"2026-04-16T16:04:09","slug":"news-of-bbc-jobs-cuts-real-concern-says-uks-culture-secretary-bbc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/534359\/","title":{"rendered":"News of BBC jobs cuts \u2018real concern\u2018, says UK\u2019s culture secretary | BBC"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The BBC\u2019s sudden announcement of 2,000 job cuts has had a \u201cvery strong effect\u201d on staff, the UK\u2019s culture secretary, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/lisa-nandy\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lisa Nandy<\/a>, has said, as employees expressed frustration that highly paid presenters and senior staff would not be the prime targets of the cuts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Nandy, who has been having conversations with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/media\/bbc\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">BBC<\/a> staff during discussions about the broadcaster\u2019s charter renewal, is understood to be keen for employees to be involved in making the cost-cutting plan, which will affect as many as 10% of the broadcaster\u2019s 21,000 staff over the next three years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">BBC staff were told they would not know who would be affected by the cuts until September, the Guardian understands, making for a morale-sapping summer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Nandy told MPs on Thursday: \u201cColleagues will know that yesterday, the BBC interim director-general announced that there will be significant cuts to staffing, which I know have had a very, very strong effect on the staff themselves, and are of real concern to people out in the country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">BBC staff were informed of the cuts on Wednesday afternoon at an online all-staff meeting led by the BBC\u2019s interim director general, Rhodri Talfan Davies. More than 500 employees are understood to have asked questions and made comments.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Younger staff, in particular, expressed concern about their future, and said they felt the response from management was \u201cit\u2019s tough, deal with it\u201d, and that they would bear the brunt of the cuts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cSo the answer for young people in the BBC is \u2018tough luck\u2019,\u201d one staff member posted online during the all-staff meeting. \u201cDo you think that answer will boost morale amongst those who are supposed to be the \u2018future of the BBC\u2019?\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Another said the seemingly continuous rounds of cuts had led to people questioning whether a future at the BBC was a viable option. \u201cI have been at the BBC for nearly two years, this is the second round of headcount reductions since I started,\u201d posted the staff member. \u201cI am in my mid-20s, and I love the BBC, but it\u2019s getting to the point of \u2018Am I next?\u2019. I want to progress my career and have some job security.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">A repeated theme was the feeling that senior staff and high-paid presenters, many on salaries of hundreds of thousands of pounds a year, would not be the prime target of the cuts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201c[Those of] us who have just joined the BBC will be the first you get rid of and keep the old guard like has happened before,\u201d said one employee. Another suggested: \u201cI love our presenters but some of them are on a silly amount of money, would some be willing to take a pay cut?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cI feel like many of us are only emotionally getting over the last two rounds of cuts,\u201d posted one employee in the meeting\u2019s forum. \u201cI personally have found it very hard to feel motivated to continue in a career in a company that seems to not know how to refrain from putting our hard-earned jobs at risk every few years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Frustrations extended to criticism of the incoming director general, Matt Brittin, a former senior executive at Google, who Nandy held talks with after news of the cuts, during which she emphasised the importance of putting the BBC on \u201ca strong financial footing\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cIn an organisation aiming to save money, why was the director general role and its \u00a3500,000 salary given to someone with no broadcast experience,\u201d queried another employee.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">After the meeting, the BBC\u2019s interim director said in an email to staff that the broadcaster was facing \u201csignificant financial pressures\u201d which needed to be responded to \u201cwith pace\u201d, adding: \u201cInevitably, these plans will also mean reducing the number of jobs in the BBC. While we still have to work through the detail, we anticipate that the overall number of jobs will fall by 1,800 to 2,000.
