{"id":534552,"date":"2026-04-16T18:26:11","date_gmt":"2026-04-16T18:26:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/534552\/"},"modified":"2026-04-16T18:26:11","modified_gmt":"2026-04-16T18:26:11","slug":"petition-lodged-for-gervonta-davis-to-immediately-fight-number-one-contender","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/534552\/","title":{"rendered":"Petition lodged for Gervonta Davis to immediately fight number one contender"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Three-division world champion <a href=\"https:\/\/boxingnewsonline.net\/boxer\/gervonta-davis\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gervonta Davis<\/a> continues to be linked to a comeback, but a petition for him to face his number one contender may scupper his proposed fight plans, or remove him from his favourable position in the lightweight division.<\/p>\n<p>Davis has not won a fight since he knocked out Frank Martin almost two years ago, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/boxing\/story\/_\/id\/44076175\/davis-roach-fight-majority-draw-knockdown-controversy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">drawing with Lamont Roach Jr<\/a> in his solitary outing since, in what was the first blemish of his now 30-0-1 professional record.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, after being issued with an arrest warrant for a domestic violence charge, the WBA named \u2018Tank\u2019 \u2018champion-in-recess\u2019, meaning that he would be given the opportunity to regain his belt upon return.<\/p>\n<p>However, reports have emerged of a <a href=\"https:\/\/boxingnewsonline.net\/news\/davis-sets-sights-on-former-champion\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">potential super-lightweight rematch against Isaac \u2018Pitbull\u2019 Cruz<\/a>, one of just two men that Davis has defeated but not knocked out.<\/p>\n<p>In response, the WBA\u2019s number one lightweight contender, Floyd \u2018Kid Austin\u2019 Schofield has entered a petition with the sanctioning body, lobbying for either a mandated fight with Davis or the opportunity to fight for the vacant title.<\/p>\n<p>In a clip posted by <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/tNtpWMbPXQg?si=dYh5EQ-V3lyAzSB4\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">FightHype<\/a>, the Texan\u2019s trainer and father, Floyd Schofield Sr, explained the situation in further detail.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are, right now, in a petition with the WBA to get the \u2018Tank\u2019 Davis fight mandated, because we have been the number one contender for 11 months now and didn\u2019t get a shot.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is like they are skipping over us. Right now, we have got that petition going to find out what the WBA and \u2018Tank\u2019 are going to do.
