It\u2019s official: Brat<\/a> is out and rock is in, according to Charli XCX<\/a>. <\/p>\n

The \u201c360\u201d singer, 33, announced that she\u2019s finishing work on her eighth album \u2013 and she\u2019s done a musical 180. <\/p>\n

\u201cI think the dance floor is dead,\u201d she said in a new cover interview with British Vogue<\/a> for its May issue. \u201cSo now we\u2019re making rock music.\u201d <\/p>\n

While the Brit Award winner, born Charlotte Emma Aitchison, didn\u2019t share a release date, the interview stated that she was completing the project last month.<\/p>\n

Charli became a global phenomenon during the release of her sixth album Brat,<\/a> with its instantly recognisable lime green cover and party girl theme capturing the zeitgeist of 2024. She took home British Album of the Year at the Brit Awards in 2025, as well as two Grammys and a Billboard Music Award. <\/p>\n

Despite the success of the hyperpop album, though, Charli said she had wanted to move away from the dance genre for her new album. <\/p>\n

\u201cIf I\u2019d made another album that felt more dance-leaning, it would have felt really hard, really sad,\u201d she explained, while her husband, The 1975\u2019s George Daniel, suggested that she \u201cbroke dance music\u201d. <\/p>\n

Teasing the new album, Charli said that she wanted to \u201cbend the possibilities of what my perspective on\u201d what rock music could be, with her new music exploring what would happen if art \u2013 \u201cthe joint main love of my life outside of George\u201d \u2013 was taken from her. <\/p>\n

\u201cHow I would have no purpose, and how for good or bad, art does provide me with purpose in my life,\u201d she added. <\/p>\n

She admitted that working on the album while also shooting a new film with Japanese director Takashi Miike had been \u201ca bit of a nightmare\u201d, breaking down in tears during the conversation. <\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m overwhelmed and emotional but I\u2019m ready to go,\u201d she said. \u201cMy body isn\u2019t handling it very well.\u201d <\/p>\n

The star also described working on her new album as a reset after Brat catapulted her to new levels of fame, revealing that she gave herself nerve damage in her neck from performing on the Brat tour. <\/p>\n

Last year, the singer released the soundtrack to Emerald Fennell\u2019s Wuthering Heights to critical acclaim, with The Independent\u2019s Helen Brown giving the album five stars<\/a> and describing it as a \u201cwindswept, gothic triumph\u201d. <\/p>\n

She also ventured into acting, playing herself in her mockumentary The Moment<\/a> earlier this year, and taking on roles in Gregg Araki\u2019s erotic comedy I Want Your Sex, thriller The Gallerist and upcoming horror Faces of Death. <\/p>\n
