It\u2019s been on the cards for a number of years, but finally, Gerry Ryan has publicly gone on the record to state that 2027 could be his final year in the sport as an owner of Jayco AlUla, Liv AlUla Jayco, and the team\u2019s development squads.<\/p>\n

Speaking on the Stanley St. Social podcas<\/a>t, the team boss discussed a variety of topics, from his entry into the sport in the early 1990s, when backing Kathy Wyatt\u2019s Barcelona Olympics dream, to the launch of GreenEdge in 2012.<\/p>\n

Ryan has poured millions of his own fortune into the sport over the years and has basically singlehandedly propped up Australian cycling to the point where almost every pro cyclist from the country over the last few decades can trace their success back to his influence.<\/p>\n

However, now in his mid-seventies, we\u2019re moving closer to the end of his time within the sport, and while his departure has been muted for a few years now, he\u2019s never officially put a time frame in public.<\/p>\n

When asked if he had a finish line in mind, Ryan said, \u201cProbably looking to the end of the year, next year. I\u2019ve been doing it for a long time, and my kids are a bit concerned about their inheritance. They like it when we\u2019re there [at races], but they see their inheritance going out the door.\u201d<\/p>\n

It must be remembered that Ryan\u2019s team almost folded at the end of last year, coming to within just a few days of collapse before a deal was struck with AlUla and a new three-year contract was put in place, with the foundations underpinned by Ryan himself.<\/p>\n
