The number of Nottingham hospital staff who looked at the medical records of the Nottingham attacks victims<\/a> has now reached 150 as bereaved families say their actions are “abhorrent”.<\/p>\n The Nottingham University Hospital Trust (NUH<\/a>), which runs the Queen’s Medical Centre and Nottingham City Hospital, continues an investigation into staff who may have inappropriately accessed the records of Barnaby Webber, Grace O’Malley-Kumar and Ian Coates.<\/p>\n The two 19-year-old University of Nottingham<\/a> students and the beloved 65-year-old Nottingham grandfather were all brutally killed by Valdo Calocane in the early hours of June 13, 2023.<\/p>\n A public inquiry into those killings continues and one of the key issues to have emerged is the unauthorised access of documents and footage about the attacks by staff at multiple agencies.<\/p>\n Nottinghamshire Police<\/a> has only just agreed to launch a fresh investigation to look at all of the officers who may have looked at CCTV footage of the attacks without a proper policing purpose.<\/p>\n NUH has now confirmed that the number of its staff who looked at the medical records of Calocane’s victims has reached 150, with the last publicly available figure reported by the BBC in March 2025 as 91.<\/p>\n The probe only came about after the bereaved families requested an audit of the separate Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust to examine who had accessed Calocane’s records at that organisation.<\/p>\n An anomaly during that audit suggested Queen’s Medical Centre staff may have looked at Barnaby, Grace and Ian’s files and the healthcare trust reported that to NUH.<\/p>\n It is understood that NUH’s investigation is being conducted in two stages, with the first assessing all of those who looked at the files and the second moving on to considering those who may have done so illegitimately.<\/p>\n Nottinghamshire Live understands the investigation is now considering around 100 staff in stage two, though the families of victims contest whether 50 staff would have needed to look at their loved one’s records and they met with senior figures from the trust at a meeting in January.<\/p>\n NUH would not confirm the number of those who have moved into stage two, though the victims’ families say this is the number they have been given by the trust.<\/p>\n The bereaved families say they insisted on a full audit of NUH staff who looked at records, with only a sample test initially being planned.<\/p>\n Dr Manjeet Shehmar, the Medical Director for NUH, said on the fact that the number of staff looking at records had gone up to 150: “We recognise the impact that this unacceptable data breach has had on the families and are sorry for the pain that these actions have caused.”<\/p>\n Sanjoy Kumar, Grace O’Malley-Kumar’s father, said of such an apology: “For my wife and I especially, the actions of the trust staff have been deeply hurtful.<\/p>\n “Our daughter Grace was a medical student and attended Queen’s Medical Centre<\/a> for lectures. She would have one day been a doctor and a colleague there, starting her career in the NHS<\/a>.<\/p>\n “From our point of view, the process to date represents the Trust ‘marking its own homework’. Any apology offered to date is perceived by us as procedural rather than substantive.”<\/p>\n
