{"id":535418,"date":"2026-04-17T05:26:20","date_gmt":"2026-04-17T05:26:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/535418\/"},"modified":"2026-04-17T05:26:20","modified_gmt":"2026-04-17T05:26:20","slug":"i-dont-recognise-double-digit-food-inflation-fears","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/535418\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;I don&#8217;t recognise&#8217; double-digit food inflation fears"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\tThursday 16 April 2026 9:05 am<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\u00a0|\u00a0\u00a0Updated:\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\tThursday 16 April 2026 2:30 pm\n\t<\/p>\n<p><img width=\"742\" height=\"495\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Ken-MurphyGettyImages-2195802125.jpg\" class=\"media \" alt=\"Ken Murphy delivering a keynote speech at a business conference, wearing a suit and gesturing at a presentation screen.\" fetchpriority=\"high\" loading=\"eager\" decoding=\"sync\"  \/>\t\tKen Murphy said Tesco has faced no supply chain disruptions so far\t<\/p>\n<p>The boss of Tesco said he doesn\u2019t \u201crecognise\u201d warnings that food inflation could soar to double digits this year due to supply chain chaos caused by the Iran war.<\/p>\n<p>Ken Murphy, chief executive of the supermarket giant, said he currently has no concerns over significant price inflation and \u201cdoesn\u2019t know\u201d whether this is coming down the track.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking on a media call shortly after publishing annual <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cityam.com\/tesco-smashes-profit-targets-despite-middle-east-uncertainty\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">results<\/a> from the UK\u2019s biggest retailer, Murphy defied the worst extent of wider industry gloom over looming price rises.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He referred to a warning from the Food and Drink Federation (FDF) earlier this month that food inflation will more than triple to nine per cent this year and could exceed 10 per cent if the Iran war persists for more than a few weeks.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Murphy said: \u201cWe are not seeing any meaningful inflation coming through, with the obvious exception of the cost prices we\u2019ve seen on fuel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t recognise the number that was published. We don\u2019t know what it\u2019s going to look like because, clearly, this is a very volatile, unpredictable situation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut what I can tell you is that we will be doing everything in our power to minimise the impact on customers,\u201d he added. <\/p>\n<p>Murphy called on the government to help supermarkets keep prices down, echoing recent calls from his counterparts at Marks &amp; Spencer and Asda.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn terms of tax pressures, industry and energy in particular, anything the government can do to help us keep prices low for customers is welcome,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>With maritime energy exports blocked from the Strait of Hormuz, through which a fifth of global oil supplies flow,\u00a0fears have risen\u00a0that knock-on disruption to global supply chains could even plunge the UK into food shortages.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The government is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/uk\/politics\/article\/iran-war-hormuz-uk-supermarkets-food-shortages-chicken-g620j8xrg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">reportedly<\/a> drawing up contingency plans for a \u201creasonable worst-case scenario\u201d which could see supermarket shelves empty of chicken, pork, and other key goods.<\/p>\n<p>Murphy downplayed food shortage fears on Thursday but said the government is \u201cdoing the right thing\u201d by making contingencies.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tRead more<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t<a class=\"read-more__link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cityam.com\/tesco-nears-crucial-update-as-iran-war-threatens-food-inflation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Tesco nears crucial update as Iran war threatens food inflation<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\t\u2018Weather hit supply chains more than Iran war\u2019<\/p>\n<p>He said Tesco has faced bigger supply chain disruptions due to weather than due to the Iran war this year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInterestingly enough, the biggest challenges we\u2019ve had on supply chain have had nothing to do with the conflict so far, but more to do with weather,\u201d he stated. <\/p>\n<p>Murphy said storms in North Africa, Morocco, southern Spain and Portugal have caused the biggest supply chain issues for Tesco so far this year.<\/p>\n<p>The Tesco boss said supply chain blockages reportedly caused by the Middle East conflict are yet to materialise: \u201cWe have no issues in our supply chain at this point and, so far, no flagged concerns from any of our suppliers or growers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As well as supply chain blockages, the Iran war has also spiked fuel costs, prompting rival supermarkets Marks and Spencer (M&amp;S) and Asda to call on the government to cut energy costs.<\/p>\n<p>Murphy said he would support any action by the Treasury to lighten the tax burden on grocers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnything the government can do to help us to keep prices low for customers is welcome.\u00a0So we would never say no to any help on things that could allow us to keep prices down,\u201d he added. <\/p>\n<p>Profit jumps despite Iran war fears<\/p>\n<p>Tesco\u2019s share price jumped by more than three per cent on Thursday, to 486p, following the supermarket\u2019s preliminary full-year results.<\/p>\n<p>The supermarket giant made an operating profit of over \u00a33.1bn in the year to February 2026, overperforming its own forecasts of between \u00a32.9 and \u00a33.1bn.<\/p>\n<p>The FTSE 100 firm turned a pre-tax profit of \u00a32.4bn, up more than eight per cent from last year, as revenue grew by 5.4 per cent to \u00a374bn.<\/p>\n<p>The grocer expects to make an even bigger profit next year, forecasting an operating profit of between \u00a33 and \u00a33.3bn, but is allowing for a wider range to insulate itself against potential disruption.<\/p>\n<p>The firm said in its results: \u201cMuch will depend upon the duration of the conflict and in particular, the potential implications for UK households and the economy more broadly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tRead more<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t<a class=\"read-more__link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cityam.com\/food-inflation-to-soar-to-9-per-cent-by-end-of-year-trade-body-warns\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">\u2018Unprecedented\u2019 \u2013 Food inflation to soar to 9 per cent by end of year<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\t\tSimilarly tagged content: <\/p>\n<p>\t\t\tSections\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\tCategories\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\tPeople &amp;
