The Royal Mail is scrapping a major service from December of this year. The Royal Mail<\/a> will cancel Saturday post deliveries – with its second class letter service ending at weekends.<\/p>\n

The decision was made by both the postal service and the Communications Workers Union (CWU). Despite the change to second-class Saturday mail, first-class letters, all parcels, and tracked items will still be delivered Monday-Saturday.<\/p>\n

Under the Universal Service Reforms, the changes will be implemented across all 1,200 UK networks by December of this year. The change is expected to be fully in place by December 2026, it has been confirmed.<\/p>\n

Joking about the update from the company, one Reddit user laughed: “Thought royal mail had already gone down to a fortnightly service tbh.”<\/p>\n

A second typed: “Just give the company back to the people of this country. F***ing fed up with billionaires asset stripping what once made this country great just to line their own pockets.”<\/p>\n

Another said: “Not sure how that is meant to solve anything? If the letter delivery mandates lose money, they will lose money whether the company is in public hands or private hands.<\/p>\n

“It being a state company isn\u2019t suddenly going to make letter delivery profitable.”<\/p>\n

They went on: “Personally I don\u2019t really see the point of second class letters anymore. Just use e-mail or pay up for what it costs.<\/p>\n

“NHS<\/a> can get discounts but even then I think that should only be reserved for people to request it (like old people) with emails the default for the rest.<\/p>\n

“Most of the letters I get are b***s*** ads anyways that go straight in the bin and if RM is losing money on them it\u2019s not great.”<\/p>\n

Alistair Cochrane, chief executive of Royal Mail, said: \u201cThis agreement with the CWU paves the way for Universal Service reform rollout and represents a significant investment in our people.<\/p>\n
