But in reality, supplements are designed to support your diet and lifestyle \u2013 they aren\u2019t a magic catch-all solution.\u2019<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"23\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">While some supplements absolutely have their place, taking too many (or the wrong ones) can have unintended, negative consequences.  <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"27\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">So before you add yet another capsule to your morning routine, here\u2019s how to navigate supplements safely and what happens if you take too much of the common ones.<\/p>\n<p>Do we *actually* need supplements?<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"33\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">A healthy, balanced diet, filled with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/food\/healthy-eating\/a64187222\/emily-english-breakfast\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/food\/healthy-eating\/a64187222\/emily-english-breakfast\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"protein-rich\" data-node-id=\"33.1\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">protein-rich<\/a> foods such as meat, fish, eggs and pulses, wholegrains, fruits and vegetables, should deliver all the vitamins and minerals your body needs. Yes. While most supplements are safe when taken as directed, problems can start to creep in if you double up, take high doses or add multiple products into your routine without really thinking about what\u2019s in them.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"52\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">\u2018Taking excess supplements can be harmful,\u2019 says Dr Rossi, \u2018when you\u2019re taking multiple products with overlapping nutrients, or taking doses above the recommended daily allowance without medical guidance\u2019.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"56\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">In some cases, supplements can even interfere with each other. \u2018For example, calcium supplements can inhibit the absorption of iron supplements.\u2019<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"60\" class=\"body-text css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">And it\u2019s surprisingly easy to accidentally take too much. \u2018It can happen, particularly if you\u2019re combining products like a multivitamin with individual supplements,\u2019 says nutritionist and Sunday Times bestselling author, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rhitrition.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.rhitrition.com\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Rhiannon Lambert\" data-node-id=\"60.1\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Rhiannon Lambert<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Signs you\u2019re taking too many supplements<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"65\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">\u2018Early signs can be quite non-specific, such as nausea, headaches, digestive discomfort or feeling unusually fatigued,\u2019 says Lambert. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"69\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">But if you\u2019ve recently added a new supplement to your daily routine, it\u2019s worth paying attention to these signals:<\/p>\n<p>Digestive issues<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"74\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Feeling <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/food\/g60317818\/how-to-reduce-bloating\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/food\/g60317818\/how-to-reduce-bloating\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"bloated\" data-node-id=\"74.1\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">bloated<\/a>, gassy, or experiencing diarrhoea? Too much of certain nutrients can upset your gut.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"78\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">High doses of minerals like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/food\/a64952545\/signs-of-iron-deficiency-women\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/food\/a64952545\/signs-of-iron-deficiency-women\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"iron\" data-node-id=\"78.1\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">iron<\/a> or calcium can disrupt balance in your gut and affect how your body absorbs other nutrients, says Dr Rossi. \u2018Even \u201cnatural\u201d or herbal supplements can have side effects or interact with medications. Taking the wrong type of probiotic strain for your needs can even make bloating worse.\u2019 <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"82\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Lambert adds that excess vitamin D can affect calcium balance, while \u2018too much iron may lead to gastrointestinal symptoms and discomfort, and high zinc intakes can interfere with the absorption of other minerals like copper\u2019.  <\/p>\n<p>Nausea and headaches<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"87\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">If you\u2019re dealing with unexplained headaches or feeling slightly nauseous, your supplements could be playing a role.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"91\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Fat-soluble vitamins \u2013 like vitamin A, D, E and K \u2013 don\u2019t just get flushed out if you have too much. Instead, they can build up in the body, \u2018potentially causing toxicity,\u2019 explains Dr Rossi. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"95\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/food\/g46349784\/best-vitamins-for-women\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/food\/g46349784\/best-vitamins-for-women\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Vitamin A\" data-node-id=\"95.0\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Vitamin A<\/a> is a key example. \u2018Over time, excessive intake may lead to toxicity, with symptoms such as headaches, liver strain and, in more serious cases, bone and skin changes, so it\u2019s important that we aren\u2019t overdosing on vitamin A (and other fat-soluble vitamins for that matter),\u2019 says Lambert.<\/p>\n<p>Feeling unusually tired<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"100\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">It sounds counterintuitive, but taking too many supplements can actually leave you feeling tired, not energised.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"104\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Because nutrients work in balance, getting too much of one can interfere with others \u2013 potentially leaving you feeling run down.<\/p>\n<p>Related Stories <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"110\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Of course, this doesn\u2019t mean you need to ditch your daily <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/food\/g65663043\/multivitamins-for-women\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/food\/g65663043\/multivitamins-for-women\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"multivitamin\" data-node-id=\"110.1\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">multivitamin<\/a> altogether.
