{"id":537661,"date":"2026-04-18T11:19:08","date_gmt":"2026-04-18T11:19:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/537661\/"},"modified":"2026-04-18T11:19:08","modified_gmt":"2026-04-18T11:19:08","slug":"brent-geese-winter-refuge-removed-from-southsea-seafront","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/537661\/","title":{"rendered":"Brent geese winter refuge removed from Southsea seafront"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">A coastal space, fenced off to the public to create a refuge for brent geese, has been taken down as the birds have left after overwintering.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The refuge is put in place every year on Southsea Common in Portsmouth, Hampshire, for the geese that migrate to the area from Siberia to feed and roost from early October.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The sanctuary for the Amber list birds is a requirement of Natural England for the \u00a3180m Southsea Coastal Scheme, due to the temporary loss of land during construction along the seafront.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The refuge, monitored three times a week during winter, saw the first arrivals in November, with the last geese recorded on 20 March.
