For a period in the 1970s, many people would have argued that there was no way anybody could better the Eagles<\/a>, whether that meant trying to compete with them on a creative or commercial level.<\/p>\n This was especially true from 1975 to 1979, when they released a run of albums that were acclaimed at levels that very few were able to match in the world of soft rock, with One of These Nights, Hotel California and The Long Run all being considered high benchmarks that other bands were looking up to as the holy trinity of the genre.<\/p>\n They\u2019d carved out a niche for themselves, and they were letting everyone else look up to them as the main target to beat. However, with that comes an immense amount of pressure, and the members of the band would have been aware of the fact that with lots of praise comes the expectation that you\u2019ll be able to follow up with something either just as spectacular or surpassing your previous efforts.<\/p>\n With the Eagles constantly looking over their shoulder to ensure that nobody else was able to take their throne, they had to keep an eye on what else was happening around them and take inspiration from a variety of different places so they couldn\u2019t be caught out for not having moved with the times. That doesn\u2019t mean that they weren\u2019t looking up to other older acts as inspiration for the sound that they were developing, and plenty of groups from close to home were acting as a jumping-off point for the band\u2019s influences.<\/p>\n Eagles were known for having called themselves \u2018California rock\u2019, which was essentially a way of stating that they were trying to embody the sound of the state<\/a> they hailed from. <\/p>\n It was evident from some of the acts that they cited as their biggest influences that they were looking to create something that felt distinctly Californian in its identity, but according to Glenn Frey, there was one act that they were constantly obsessed with the idea of emulating. <\/p>\n \u201cWe loved all the singing bands,\u201d Frey said of his Californian compatriots, before naming The Byrds and The Beach Boys as major influences on their overall sound. \u201cBut to be honest, right then I had my eye on Poco, and I wanted to go beyond them too.\u201d<\/p>\n While Poco had been around for a little longer than the Eagles, they were a remarkably overlooked group, perhaps for how they\u2019d arrived too early for people to pay attention to them. \u201cIronically, we\u2019d have two bass players over the years, both from Poco,\u201d Frey continued, before naming the one song where he felt the band finally managed to outdo their contemporaries. \u201c\u2018Peaceful Easy Feeling\u2019 had a happy, country-rock quality but a bittersweet irony about it that I thought was really great. I still love that song. Love singing it.\u201d<\/p>\n It\u2019s certainly a shame that they got nowhere near the level of fame that Eagles ever had, and that might be partially on account of the fact that they poached both Randy Meisner and Timothy B Schmit<\/a> from the band, but it was evident from this crossover that the appreciation Frey and the other members of the band had for Poco was real, and that in their mind, they were perhaps the most significant Californian rock group that paved the way for Eagles\u2019 success.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
