{"id":539006,"date":"2026-04-19T07:05:08","date_gmt":"2026-04-19T07:05:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/539006\/"},"modified":"2026-04-19T07:05:08","modified_gmt":"2026-04-19T07:05:08","slug":"the-story-of-the-secret-railway-in-new-romney","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/539006\/","title":{"rendered":"The story of the secret railway in New Romney"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Fast forward 55 years, and the society boasts a track which goes both up and downhill, is &#8220;about an eighth of a mile long&#8221; and has capacity for 2.5, 3.5 and 5in gauge locomotives.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Nash, 66, is a lifelong devotee of the railway.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;I fell in love with the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway when I was three or four&#8230;I first came to this track in 1972, and I&#8217;ve been hooked ever since.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">For the vice chair, part of the appeal is rooted in the ongoing challenge of &#8220;driving a steam engine&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">He said: &#8220;They are the nearest thing to a living being that mankind has created.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;They all have their moods.
