{"id":539172,"date":"2026-04-19T09:46:08","date_gmt":"2026-04-19T09:46:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/539172\/"},"modified":"2026-04-19T09:46:08","modified_gmt":"2026-04-19T09:46:08","slug":"councils-spend-more-than-2m-on-pothole-compensation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/539172\/","title":{"rendered":"Councils spend more than \u00a32m on pothole compensation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Conservative-run Essex County Council has increased its funding for road maintenance over the past five years.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The Labour government has also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c2ldxv21v50o\" class=\"ssrcss-1e0jzsh-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">provided councils across the East with a \u00a372m injection<\/a> for pothole repairs. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Essex County Council spent \u00a364m last year on road repairs and resurfacing, up from \u00a348m from 2020-21. More than 12,000 carriageway defects were fixed in the past 12 months, it said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The Conservative Party, which runs Essex County Council, said the authority secured record investment for Essex roads. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The Liberal Democrats proposed increasing council tax by an extra 1% and putting \u00a310m into road repairs.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Labour called for an independent inspector to stop poor repair work.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The Green Party has said Essex County Council &#8220;is good at inspecting and monitoring, but less good at actually fixing&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Nigel Farage MP said Reform UK would take fixing potholes &#8220;very seriously&#8221; and use technology to make more permanent repairs.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Conservative-run Essex County Council has increased its funding for road maintenance over the past five years.
