O\u2019Donnell + Tuomey<\/a> has completed the V&A East Museum<\/a> in London. The project was commissioned by the Victoria and Albert Museum to create an accessible institution, particularly for younger audiences and local communities.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The new building includes galleries and exhibition space spread across five levels, adjacent to\u00a0DS+R\u2019s V&A East Storehouse<\/a>, which opened in May 2025.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

The design of the scheme draws on references from the V&A\u2019s<\/a> holdings, including the sculptural tailoring of Crist\u00f3bal Balenciaga, as well as the Japanese spatial concept of \u201cMa\u201d, or the space between elements. The resulting scheme sees a protective outer envelope wrapping a more regular internal core. Circulation is organized within the space between the layers, creating a sequence of routes that guide visitors vertically through the building.<\/p>\n

The museum\u2019s exterior is defined by a folded facade composed of 479 sand-colored precast concrete panels. Each panel is uniquely shaped and detailed with scored linework referencing the V&A\u2019s visual identity. The faceted surface is designed to respond to changing light conditions, while integrated seating elements extend the building\u2019s interface with the surrounding public realm.<\/p>\n

Internally, the museum is arranged across five public levels, including permanent galleries, a 9,000-square-foot temporary exhibition space, learning facilities, and a top-floor events area. A continuous circulation route carved into the outer wall thickness connects the spaces. Openings and terraces provide daylight and views across East Bank, reinforcing connections between the museum and its urban context.<\/p>\n

\u201cSince winning the architectural competition in 2015, we have worked with the V&A team to make a new kind of museum, welcoming to a wide audience,\u201d John Tuomey said about the scheme. \u201cV&A East Museum stands on a public square at the heart of East Bank, Stratford\u2019s new cultural and educational district. Making public work with civic purpose is a motivating principle of our practice.\u201d<\/p>\n
