French President Emmanuel Macron<\/a> paid tribute to an actor \u201cwith whom we loved, dreamed and grew.\u201d French media reported that Baye died on Friday in Paris from a neurodegenerative disease, quoting a statement from her relatives.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe loved Nathalie Baye so much,\u201d Macron wrote in a message on X. \u201cThrough her voice, her smiles, and her modesty, she accompanied the past decades of French cinema<\/a>, from Fran\u00e7ois Truffaut to Tonie Marshall.\u201d<\/p>\n

Baye featured in more than 80 movies, switching from mainstream comedies to auteur films with ease in a career that spanned over five decades. She twice claimed the prize for best actress at the C\u00e9sars, France\u2019s equivalent of the Oscars<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Baye, who was Leonardo DiCaprio\u2019s<\/a> on-screen mother in Steven Spielberg\u2019s \u201cCatch Me If You Can,\u201d won both popular and critical acclaim for her role in \u201cVenus Beauty Institute,\u201d a romantic comedy that follows three women working in a Parisian beauty salon as they search for fulfilment. Marshall won the C\u00e9sar award for best director in 2000 for the movie.<\/p>\n

The daughter of artists, Baye first trained as a dancer then honed her acting skills at the famed Cours Simon and the Conservatoire. She took the spotlight in Fran\u00e7ois Truffaut\u2019s \u201cDay for Night\u201d in 1973 and, five years later, worked with him again on \u201cThe Green Room.\u201d<\/p>\n

Baye worked with directors Maurice Pialat, Claude Sautet and Bertrand Tavernier, among others. She rose to fame with \u201cThe Return of Martin Guerre\u201d in 1982. A year later, her role as a tough-talking streetwalker devoted to her down-and-out gangster boyfriend Philippe Leotard in \u201cLa Balance\u201d earned her a C\u00e9sar.<\/p>\n

Baye liked to work with emerging filmmakers such as Xavier Beauvois.
