Each day\u2019s game of NYT Connections goes live at midnight local time. Before we get to today\u2019s Connections hints and answers, here are Wednesday\u2019s:<\/p>\n

I love the proverb “mighty oaks from little acorns grow.” I think that absolutely holds true in the metaphorical sense. And the literal one, obviously!<\/p>\n

Today\u2019s NYT Connections hints and answers for Thursday, July 17 are coming right up.<\/p>\n

How To Play Connections<\/p>\n

Connections is a free, popular New York Times daily word game. You get a new puzzle at midnight every day. You can play on the NYT\u2019s website or Games app.<\/p>\n

You\u2019re presented with a grid of 16 words. Your task is to arrange them into four groups of four by figuring out the links between them. The groups could be things like items you can click, names for research study participants or words preceded by a body part.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s only one solution for each puzzle, and you\u2019ll need to be careful when it comes to words that might fit into more than one category. You can shuffle the words to perhaps help you see links between them.<\/p>\n

Each group is color coded. The yellow group is usually the easiest to figure out, blue and green fall in the middle, and the purple group is usually the most difficult one. The purple group often involves wordplay.<\/p>\n

Select four words you think go together and press Submit. If you make a guess and you\u2019re incorrect, you\u2019ll lose a life. If you\u2019re close to having a correct group, you might see a message telling you that you\u2019re one word away from getting it right, but you\u2019ll still need to figure out which one to swap.<\/p>\n

If you make four mistakes, it\u2019s game over. Let\u2019s make sure that doesn\u2019t happen with the help of some hints, and, if you\u2019re really struggling, today\u2019s Connections answers. As with Wordle and other similar games, it\u2019s easy to share results with your friends on social media and group chats.<\/p>\n

If you have an NYT All Access or Games subscription, you can access the publication\u2019s Connections archive. This includes every previous game of Connections, so you can go back and play any of those that you have missed.<\/p>\n

I was delighted to see a reference to Super Mario World, one of my top five games of all time, on the top line. POKE and PAC could have been references to Pok\u00e9mon and Pac-Man, respectively. The rappers\/rap-group references caught my eye too \u2013 WU-TANG (Clan), BIGGIE (Smalls), (Tu)PAC (Shakur) and SNOOP Dogg. But it became clear very quickly that those were a red herring.<\/p>\n

HARD FEELINGS had to be preceded by “no,” and I found three other words that fit the bill. That took care of the greens. Here, BIGGIE means “big deal.” I figured that the spying words\/phrase would be the yellows and that assumption proved to be correct.<\/p>\n

At that point, the purples seemed abundantly clear to me. (DRUM AND) BASS, (CAMI)SOLE and (CAPE) COD all stood out as types of fish. I vaguely remembered that “tang” was a type of fish too, so that took care of the ostensibly most difficult group of the day.<\/p>\n

That left the blues. Of course, Super MARIO WORLD was my key to figuring out that connection. A super PAC is a type of political committee that helps fund election campaign advertising.<\/p>\n

That was a more straightforward game than I first suspected. A perfect game today extends my streak to 142 wins. Here’s my grid for today:<\/p>\n
