{"id":539938,"date":"2026-04-19T20:22:08","date_gmt":"2026-04-19T20:22:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/539938\/"},"modified":"2026-04-19T20:22:08","modified_gmt":"2026-04-19T20:22:08","slug":"judgment-day-as-starmer-faces-commons-showdown-over-mandelson-scandal-keir-starmer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/539938\/","title":{"rendered":"Judgment day as Starmer faces Commons showdown over Mandelson scandal | Keir Starmer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Keir Starmer will deliver a high-stakes statement to MPs on Monday as he struggles to overcome fears inside his government that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/peter-mandelson\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Peter Mandelson<\/a> vetting scandal could yet cost him his leadership.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In what is set to be a dramatic showdown, the prime minister will set out how Mandelson was able to take up his role as UK ambassador without the Foreign Office revealing it had overruled the decision to fail his vetting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The scandal, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/2026\/apr\/16\/revealed-mandelson-failed-vetting-but-foreign-office-overruled-decision\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">first revealed by the Guardian last week<\/a>, has already led to the sacking of the top civil servant at the Foreign Office, Olly Robbins, who is expected to appear before MPs on Tuesday in what could be another moment of grave peril for Starmer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Ministers spent the weekend trying to shore up Starmer\u2019s position after opposition party leaders called for him to quit over the affair, arguing he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/2026\/apr\/18\/starmer-would-have-blocked-mandelson-role-over-vetting-failure-says-lammy\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">would not have gone ahead with sending Mandelson to Washington<\/a> had he known.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">But senior government figures are concerned that this week could be make-or-break for the prime minister \u2013 despite him being bolstered by his handling of the Iran crisis \u2013 if more damaging information should emerge or if sceptical <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/labour\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Labour<\/a> MPs should finally lose faith.<\/p>\n<p>double quotation mark\u2018Am I furious that I wasn\u2019t told? I should have been told, and I wasn\u2019t\u2019Keir Starmer<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWe just don\u2019t know how it will all play out, but all roads lead back to the original sin: Keir\u2019s decision to appoint Peter Mandelson to Washington even though everybody knew it was high risk. This week could go either way,\u201d one said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Starmer said on Sunday he would make it \u201ccrystal clear\u201d to MPs he had been in the dark over Mandelson\u2019s vetting \u2013 and said it was \u201cunforgivable\u201d the Foreign Office failed to tell him after he had told MPs due process had been followed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The prime minister will set out the facts on Mandelson\u2019s security vetting after he instructed officials to urgently establish them when he was finally informed about the decision last Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Downing Street also sought to demolish the argument from Robbins\u2019s allies that he was prevented by law from telling ministers that Mandelson had failed vetting, arguing that there was a difference between being involved in the decision and being informed about it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">It published an explanatory document which said: \u201cNo law stops civil servants sensibly flagging UK security vetting recommendations, while rightly protecting detailed sensitive vetting information, to allow ministers to make judgments on appointments or on explaining matters to parliament.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">At the same time, Starmer told the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/news\/politics\/keir-starmer-mandelson-wasnt-told-37038699\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Daily Mirror<\/a>: \u201cThe fact that I wasn\u2019t told that Peter Mandelson had failed his security vetting when he was appointed is astonishing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThe fact that I wasn\u2019t told when I said to parliament that due process had been followed is unforgivable, and that\u2019s why I intend to set out in parliament on Monday the facts behind that, so there\u2019s full transparency in relation to it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cBut am I furious that I wasn\u2019t told? Yes, I am. Am I furious that other ministers weren\u2019t told? Yes, I am. I should have been told, and I wasn\u2019t told.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Robbins, meanwhile, is understood to be taking legal advice after being sacked as head of the Foreign Office, and ahead of answering questions from the foreign affairs select committee on the scandal on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The former top civil servant is understood to feel angry at what he believes to be his unfair treatment by the prime minister, and determined to put his side of the story, after his dismissal sent a chill through Whitehall.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">David Lammy, the deputy prime minister, told the Guardian that voters wanted stability, not \u201ca self-flagellating, internally focused\u201d governing party.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">There has been frequent speculation that a leadership contest may ensue after what are expected to be brutal local and devolved elections for Labour on 7 May. However, in recent weeks, Labour MPs appeared to have stepped back.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cIn the middle of 2026, with a serious global crisis affecting prices and affordability, the idea of jettisoning one leader because of a bad set of local results, it is just pie in the sky, if you think the electorate are going to thank us for that,\u201d Lammy said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWhat will happen if we were to do that is that, very quickly, people would call for a general election.
