A new Netflix<\/a> comedy movie that stars the daughter of a Hollywood legend has soared up the charts.<\/p>\n This week the black comedy <\/a>Roommates was released on the streaming service, where it\u2019s now the second most-watched movie on the streaming service in the UK.<\/p>\n The \u2018unhinged\u2019 release <\/a>follows college roommates Devon<\/a> \u2013 played by Sadie Sandler \u2013 and Celeste, played by Chloe East, whose \u2018blossoming friendship spirals into a war of passive aggression and hilarious chaos\u2019.<\/p>\n As Netflix has teased, Devon is a shy first year student who agrees to be roommates with the fiery Celeste.<\/p>\n Although the two are polar opposites, they click and quickly become inseparable.<\/p>\n \t\t\t\tGet personalised updates on all things Netflix\t\t\t<\/p>\n Wake up to find news on your TV shows in your inbox every morning with Metro\u2019s TV Newsletter.<\/p>\n Sign up to our newsletter<\/a> and then select your show in the link we\u2019ll send you so we can get TV news tailored to you.<\/p>\n \u2018Devon and Celeste wade through freshman-year chaos \u2014 frat parties, first hangovers, packed school schedules, and new friends \u2014 arm in arm,\u2019 Tudum has shared.<\/p>\n \t\t \u2018At first, their friendship buoys Devon during her first stint away from her parents, Brian and Hannah, and her little brother, Alex.<\/p>\n \u2018But soon Devon feels increasingly irritated by and distrustful of Celeste. During a fateful, karaoke-fueled spring break in Panama City, their war of passive aggression boils over, showing just how crazy your roommates can make you.\u2019<\/p>\n Sadie, 19, is the daughter of Adam Sandler \u2013 whose films have grossed over $2billion (\u00a31.4billion) worldwide<\/a> \u2013 and his wife Jackie Sandler. Over the years he\u2019s starred in movies including Billy Madison, Happy Gilmore, The Wedding Singer and 50 First Dates<\/a>.<\/p>\n The actress began appearing in films as a child but has more recently featured in You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah and Happy Gilmore 2.<\/p>\n Meanwhile her co-star Chloe also began her career as a child star when she appeared in True Blood and has since gone on to appear in The Fabelmans and Heretic.<\/p>\n \t\t \t\t Roommates was directed by Chandler Levack, with the producers being Adam\u2019s company Happy Madison. The script was written by Saturday Night Live<\/a>\u2019s Jimmy Fowlie and Ceara O\u2019Sullivan.<\/p>\n Although reviews of the film have been mixed, The Guardian questioned why it was quietly dropped without little fanfare.<\/p>\n \u2018Roommates is unusually baffling, an undeniably imperfect film yes, but one with enough going for it that I could imagine some early champions. The bar for comedies, teen comedies, streaming comedies and, christ, streaming movies at large is as low as it can possibly go at this oversaturated yet underdeveloped moment which makes Roommates a film to shout about rather than quietly bury,\u2019 its review read.<\/p>\n \u2018Roommates might not rival the fizzy, formative teen films it both references (Clueless) and often directly cribs from (Mean Girls) but it still belongs in a different league to what we\u2019re mostly served right now. Could someone possibly tell that to Netflix?\u2019 it added.<\/p>\n In its wrap of the film, Variety shared: \u2018There\u2019s a complicated, bittersweet study of female friendship fighting to free itself from the glib, shiny, Saturday Night Live-adjacent comic veneer of Roommates, and when it shows through, in enticing fits and starts, it even approaches wisdom.<\/p>\n \t\t \t\t \u2018Elsewhere, however, this Netflix original from up-and-coming Canadian filmmaker Chandler Levack disappointingly flattens the moral and emotional zigzags of an increasingly toxic college roommate situation, losing nuance as it seeks to appoint one of its leads a heroine and the other a villain.\u2019<\/p>\n Meanwhile IndieWire wrote: \u2018The film won\u2019t be remembered as a campus classic, or even in the upper half of college movies, but it\u2019s also not hard to see a world where somebody watches it at exactly the right time in their lives and proceeds to cherish it forever. Roommates has a real chance at being a formative experience for someone, which is more than a lot of movies can say. But those of us who have already been sufficiently formed?
