There are more powder options and awful-tasting bars available than ever before. It\u2019s emphasized at restaurants and in products you never thought would be a protein source (toaster pastries???). It\u2019s all part of a tectonic shift in culture: Americans are pursuing healthier lifestyles and consuming more protein and fewer carbs.<\/p>\n<p>The protein\u2013GLP-1 connection<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__StyledText-sc-5791265-8 bdIWsa\">The increase in popularity (and affordability) of GLP-1s like Ozempic and Wegovy in the last few years <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/03\/21\/glp-1-diets-restaurants-protein-fiber-weight-loss-drugs.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">lines up<\/a> perfectly with the spike in demand for protein:<\/p>\n<p>A 2025 Gallup <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/shots-health-news\/2025\/10\/28\/nx-s1-5587805\/glp-1-ozempic-zepbound-gallup-obesity-rate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">report<\/a> found that 12% of Americans (~30 million) were taking weight loss drugs, up from 6% in 2024. A separate <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/32986169\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">study<\/a> said that share was just 2.9% in 2019.The 2025 IFIC Food &amp; Health Survey <a href=\"https:\/\/www.provisioneronline.com\/articles\/119093-on-the-rise-americas-protein-obsession\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">showed<\/a> that 71% of Americans have increased their protein intake. Research from Cargill <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cargill.com\/2025\/consumers-are-seeking-more-protein-for-health-and-taste-in-2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">found<\/a> that, six years earlier, only 48% were upping their protein consumption.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__StyledText-sc-5791265-8 bdIWsa\">Businesses jumping on the trend: General Mills did <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/07\/22\/protein-craze-general-mills-pepsico-kraft-heinz.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">$100 million in sales<\/a> in the US in its fiscal 2024 from its protein cereals alone. PepsiCo\u2014the makers of Doritos Protein\u2014expects the protein category to continue to grow. Meanwhile, a study funded by the beef stick company Chomps found that protein snacks are growing at three times the rate of the overall snacking industry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__StyledText-sc-5791265-8 bdIWsa\">Going after the health-conscious: Writing \u201cprotein\u201d on a bag of chips or tub of ice cream appears to be working. A 2025 survey from the National Frozen &amp; Refrigerated Foods Association found that 46% of GLP-1 drug users are more likely to purchase a frozen food product if it has high-protein content.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__StyledText-sc-5791265-8 bdIWsa\">Bottom line: With the prices of GLP-1s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/health\/health-news\/weight-loss-drug-prices-2026-glp-1-pills-trumprx-what-expect-rcna249520\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">coming down<\/a>, and more pill forms on the way for people who hate needles, the demand for protein may only increase.
