{"id":541439,"date":"2026-04-20T18:02:08","date_gmt":"2026-04-20T18:02:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/541439\/"},"modified":"2026-04-20T18:02:08","modified_gmt":"2026-04-20T18:02:08","slug":"hmp-lowdham-grange-inmate-who-died-in-hospital-had-tb-inquest-hears","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/541439\/","title":{"rendered":"HMP Lowdham Grange inmate who died in hospital &#8216;had TB&#8217;, inquest hears"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Addressing the jury, assistant coroner Adam Pearson said all Lowdham Grange prisoners were offered a screening for TB after &#8220;a number of cases&#8221; were discovered.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;Mr Sillerico, it seems, declined to be screened for TB at that stage,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The court heard Sillerico &#8211; who was also known as Uziel Mendez &#8211; was seen by a nurse on 6 October 2024 at the request of a prison officer, and after his observations were taken, a further visit was recommended the following day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">On 7 October a nurse took further observations, leading to a code blue emergency being called, and paramedics arrived to take the prisoner to hospital, where he was diagnosed with TB.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The court heard Sillerico weighed 43.2kg (6st 11lb) on the day he was moved to hospital, down from 72.2kg (11st 5lb) from when he was transferred to Lowdham Grange.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Sillerico died in hospital on 18 November 2024, which the coroner said was caused by a sigmoid perforation &#8211; a rupture in the bowels.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The inquest continues.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Addressing the jury, assistant coroner Adam Pearson said all Lowdham Grange prisoners were offered a screening for TB&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":541440,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[10],"tags":[59,102,56,54,55],"class_list":{"0":"post-541439","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-health","8":"tag-gb","9":"tag-health","10":"tag-uk","11":"tag-united-kingdom","12":"tag-unitedkingdom"},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/541439","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=541439"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/541439\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/541440"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=541439"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=541439"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=541439"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
