It is located in Utopia Planitia, a roughly 2,000-mile-wide (3,300 kilometers) plain in Mars&#8217; northern hemisphere.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-83a5d242-c3db-48e6-9864-36798d7abc08-2\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/nasa\" data-auto-tag-linker=\"true\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/nasa\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/nasa\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NASA<\/a>&#8216;s Viking probes first photographed the blackened ground in 1976, shortly after arriving at the Red Planet. Since then, several photos have shown that this feature is expanding across the surrounding landscape; these include <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/ESA_Multimedia\/Images\/2026\/04\/Mars_Express_captures_dark_ash_covering_Mars_s_Utopia_Planitia\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/ESA_Multimedia\/Images\/2026\/04\/Mars_Express_captures_dark_ash_covering_Mars_s_Utopia_Planitia\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">new images<\/a> from the European Space Agency&#8217;s (ESA) Mars Express orbiter, which were captured in 2024 and released April 15.<\/p>\n<p>            You may like<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-fe3d4195-eaab-4316-85ee-1750d2d35023\">It is unclear how large the shadowy feature is. However, sections of the patch&#8217;s southern boundary have moved farther south by at least 200 miles (320 km), based on the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/ESA_Multimedia\/Images\/2026\/04\/Viking_and_Mars_Express_images_of_part_of_Utopia_Planitia_on_Mars\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/ESA_Multimedia\/Images\/2026\/04\/Viking_and_Mars_Express_images_of_part_of_Utopia_Planitia_on_Mars\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">latest photos<\/a> from <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/european-space-agency\" data-auto-tag-linker=\"true\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/european-space-agency\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/european-space-agency\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ESA<\/a>. In 1976, the Viking 2 lander touched down in Utopia Planitia and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/mars\/nasa-may-have-unknowingly-found-and-killed-alien-life-on-mars-50-years-ago-scientist-claims\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/mars\/nasa-may-have-unknowingly-found-and-killed-alien-life-on-mars-50-years-ago-scientist-claims\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/mars\/nasa-may-have-unknowingly-found-and-killed-alien-life-on-mars-50-years-ago-scientist-claims\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">carried out a series of &#8220;biological experiments&#8221;<\/a> until its demise in 1980.<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-a6820d8c-3f36-441c-9358-f1d0b91b0ce4\">More recently, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/china\" data-auto-tag-linker=\"true\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/china\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/china\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">China<\/a>&#8216;s Zhurong rover also <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/china-mars-rover-landing-success-tianwen-1-zhurong.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/china-mars-rover-landing-success-tianwen-1-zhurong.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/china-mars-rover-landing-success-tianwen-1-zhurong.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">touched down there in 2021<\/a> and explored the giant plain before <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/space-exploration\/china-finally-admits-its-hibernating-mars-rover-may-never-wake-up\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/space-exploration\/china-finally-admits-its-hibernating-mars-rover-may-never-wake-up\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/space-exploration\/china-finally-admits-its-hibernating-mars-rover-may-never-wake-up\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">going dark in 2023<\/a>. Chinese scientists have since used the Zhurong data to show that Utopia Planitia was most likely once <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/mars\/mars-was-once-a-vacation-style-beach-planet-chinese-rover-scans-reveal\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/mars\/mars-was-once-a-vacation-style-beach-planet-chinese-rover-scans-reveal\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/mars\/mars-was-once-a-vacation-style-beach-planet-chinese-rover-scans-reveal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">covered with one of Mars&#8217; largest oceans<\/a>, and they have even mapped out what they <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/mars\/chinas-mars-rover-zhurong-finds-possible-shoreline-of-ancient-red-planet-ocean\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/mars\/chinas-mars-rover-zhurong-finds-possible-shoreline-of-ancient-red-planet-ocean\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/mars\/chinas-mars-rover-zhurong-finds-possible-shoreline-of-ancient-red-planet-ocean\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">think was once a shoreline<\/a>.
