A BBC report<\/a> found signs of illegal \u201cinsider trading\u201d based on President Donald Trump\u2019s news-making pronouncements, but a financial expert said there\u2019s a low possibility that anyone \u201cwill be prosecuted.\u201d<\/p>\n

The BBC looked at claims that traders have been betting millions of dollars just before Trump makes major announcements to reporters or via Truth Social.<\/p>\n

According to the report, \u201cThe BBC has examined trade volume data on several financial markets and matched them to some of the president\u2019s most significant market-moving statements.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt found a consistent pattern of spikes<\/a> just hours, or sometimes minutes, before a social media post or media interview was made public,\u201d the report said.<\/p>\n

The BBC report gave \u201cfive of the most significant examples\u201d of lucrative trades made after Trump comments like, \u201cThe war is very complete, pretty much,\u201d and \u201cComplete and total resolution to hostilities.\u201d<\/p>\n

The report added that \u201csome of the biggest movements have been in oil trades on the futures market,\u201d relating to Trump\u2019s comments on the Iran war.<\/p>\n

Oil traders reacted to news that the conflict could end quickly \u201cby selling oil, with the price plunging by around 25%,\u201d the report said.<\/p>\n

\u201cHowever, market data shows a huge surge of bets were placed on the price of oil falling\u201d a full 47 minutes before a reporter posted the president\u2019s comments to X.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe traders who placed those bets will have made millions of dollars from the movement in oil prices,\u201d the report said.<\/p>\n

Trading based on insider information has been illegal since the Securities Act was passed in 1933, and was extended to cover government officials in 2012.<\/p>\n

Lifestyle guru Martha Stewart famously served five months in federal prison in 2004 in connection with a trade based on an illegal insider tip.<\/p>\n

\u201cSome analysts say it bears the hallmarks of illegal insider trading, whereby bets are made by people based on information that is not available to the general public,\u201d the report said. \u201cOthers say the picture is more complicated and that some traders have become more adept at anticipating the president\u2019s interventions. \u201d<\/p>\n

Regardless, a professor with the French Graduate School of Economic and Commercial Sciences, told the BBC, \u201cYou can have massive trades on a financial instrument that clearly show that someone was privy to what Donald Trump was about to declare, yet there is a strong chance that no-one will be prosecuted.\u201d<\/p>\n
