There\u2019s no separating Steven Tyler<\/a> from all of the work he has done for Aerosmith over the years. <\/p>\n Even though every single lead singer has those few moments when they start to wonder if they really need the rest of their band, there\u2019s a good reason why the vanity projects that Tyler has done over the years aren\u2019t necessarily giving Aerosmith\u2019s classics a run for their money or anything. The chemistry between him and Joe Perry is what made all of their songs work, and even when looking at the biggest bands in the world, Tyler knew better than to go too far towards any other group.<\/p>\n I mean, most of the band already had that problem when Perry quit in the late 1970s. The guitarslinger may have been looking to do something on his own and get the hell away from Tyler for a little while, but the fact is that they are musical brothers at the end of the day. Sure, they fight all the time, but the whole point behind them working together is to play off each other\u2019s strengths.\u00a0<\/p>\n And while the world could go ahead and call them Rolling Stones ripoffs<\/a> all they want, it\u2019s not like the chemistry wasn\u2019t there between Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, either. Jagger wasn\u2019t going to get the same kind of massive hit if he wasn\u2019t with The Stones, but when someone calls you and asks if you want to jam with the other members of Led Zeppelin, it would have been hard for anyone in Tyler\u2019s position to say no.<\/p>\n After all, Zeppelin was practically the number-two band after The Stones in a lot of ways when Aerosmith came up with their first riffs. Perry already looked like a more Americanised version of Jimmy Page with his different threads onstage, but if American Idol was a step too far for the rest of the group, hearing about Tyler jamming on songs with Zeppelin must have felt like he was leaving them in the dust.<\/p>\n Tyler wasn\u2019t going to be welcomed back with open arms after making a stunt like that, but he emphasised the fact that his stint with Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones was never going to amount to anything, saying<\/a>, \u201cI called Jimmy up after I left, two weeks later, and said, \u2018You\u2019re in a classic band, and so is mine, and I just can\u2019t do that to my guys, and I can\u2019t do it to Robert [Plant],\u2019 and I couldn\u2019t see finding a year to really put myself into it. So for whatever the band thought, never in a million years was I going to quit Aerosmith to start Zeppelin.\u201d<\/p>\n When you\u2019re talking about one of the most celebrated rock bands in the world, though, that\u2019s a bit of a tough call to make. Tyler wasn\u2019t trying to disrespect the legacy of Zeppelin by any stretch, but if someone is coming to hear the former members of the greatest rock and roll band of all time, there\u2019s no way that he would take the whole thing seriously if they didn\u2019t have Robert Plant involved somehow.<\/p>\n And, really, a lot of Tyler\u2019s best moves don\u2019t exactly work well with what Zeppelin was suited for. Aerosmith were a band of many talents, but since their brand of boogie relied a lot more on old-school blues rhythms, it would have been a bit more difficult for them to latch onto the same kinds of offbeat rhythms and strange time signatures that Zeppelin infused into a lot of their classic songs.<\/p>\n It was a great honour for him to even be asked, but the idea of carrying on onstage without Joe Perry would have felt wrong. Tyler was already going to have an uphill battle when coming back to his bandmates, but compared to all the other legendary frontmen of his generation, he knew better than to even try to match the same energy that \u2018Percy\u2019 had in the age of Physical Graffiti.<\/a><\/p>\n<\/p>\n
