{"id":542816,"date":"2026-04-21T12:38:16","date_gmt":"2026-04-21T12:38:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/542816\/"},"modified":"2026-04-21T12:38:16","modified_gmt":"2026-04-21T12:38:16","slug":"neil-dusheiko-architects-extends-british-home-to-frame-church","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/542816\/","title":{"rendered":"Neil Dusheiko Architects extends British home to frame church"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A large picture window draws focus to a Gothic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/churches\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">church<\/a> beside this house <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/residential-extensions\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">extension<\/a>\u00a0in Cambridgeshire, completed by London studio <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/neil-dusheiko\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Neil Dusheiko Architects<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Named Church House, the extension project was designed for a family relocating to South Cambridgeshire from London, who were particularly drawn to the presence of the Grade-II* listed Gothic church next to the home&#8217;s conservation area site.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/neildusheiko.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Neil Dusheiko Architects<\/a> reconfigured both the main home and an adjacent coach house in its garden, with their layouts, openings and material palette all informed by the presence of the church.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2318250 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/neil-dusheiko-architects-church-house-extension-uk_dezeen_2364_col_11.jpg\" alt=\"Exterior view of home extension by Neil Dusheiko Architects\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1188\"  loading=\"lazy\"\/>Neil Dusheiko Architects has extended a home in Cambridgeshire<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The project is a quiet dialogue between old and new, creating a contemporary home that feels rooted in its setting,&#8221; studio director Neil Dusheiko told Dezeen.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We wanted to create an architectural composition that brings together three distinct characters on a single domestic stage,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Church House, the Coach House and the Grade II*-listed church opposite now form a kind of spatial trinity, held in gentle dialogue across garden and sky.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2318247 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/neil-dusheiko-architects-church-house-extension-uk_dezeen_2364_col_8.jpg\" alt=\"Church House extension in the UK\" width=\"2364\" height=\"2955\"  loading=\"lazy\"\/>A large picture window frames a neighbouring church<\/p>\n<p>Due to its conservation area setting, the front elevation of the home remains largely untouched, with the extension tucked at the rear, containing a sunken dining area.<\/p>\n<p>Pale brickwork was used for the extension and left exposed on the interior alongside a ceiling of oak beams, chosen to tie the new spaces in with both the brickwork of the existing home and the timber beams of the church hall.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2318265 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/neil-dusheiko-architects-church-house-extension-uk_dezeen_2364_col_26.jpg\" alt=\"Church House interior by Neil Dusheiko Architects\" width=\"2364\" height=\"3152\"  loading=\"lazy\"\/>A sunken dining area is housed within the extension<\/p>\n<p>While small in size, this extension allowed the home&#8217;s original plan to be reconfigured, with views of the church immediately framed upon entering through a large, open kitchen space.<\/p>\n<p>A series of living spaces is organised at the front of the home, while the first floor layout was kept largely the same, with the creation of a new ensuite bathroom for the main bedroom and updated interior finishes to match the spaces below.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2026\/04\/10\/goldstein-heather-west-london-house\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img width=\"191\" height=\"191\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/west-london-house-goldstein-heather-london-england-architecture_dezeen_2364_col_21-sq2-191x191.jpg\" class=\"excludeLightbox wp-post-image\" alt=\"Goldstein Heather West London House\" decoding=\"async\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p> Goldstein Heather doubles London home&#8217;s footprint with four-storey extension\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The dining room is the defining moment,&#8221; Dusheiko said. &#8220;Large-format glazing frames the church tower directly in view, the floor drops to create a more intimate ceiling height, and the garden wraps around on two sides.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is a space that could only exist in this exact place, completely specific to its setting, and that kind of specificity is what we are always working towards,&#8221;
