{"id":543142,"date":"2026-04-21T16:44:10","date_gmt":"2026-04-21T16:44:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/543142\/"},"modified":"2026-04-21T16:44:10","modified_gmt":"2026-04-21T16:44:10","slug":"france-freezes-e6b-spending-this-year-because-of-middle-east-crisis-politico","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/543142\/","title":{"rendered":"France freezes \u20ac6B spending this year because of Middle East crisis \u2013 POLITICO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Finance Minister Roland Lescure was quick to insist that the freeze would not inevitably lead to spending cuts, even if this is likely in future. \u201cWe are taking precautionary measures, we will be able to adjust throughout the year,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Lescure confirmed that the government has lowered its growth forecast to 0.9 percent for this year, while raising its inflation forecast to 1.9 percent.<\/p>\n<p>The French government is eyeing spending cuts to narrow its deficit \u2014 the gap between what it collects in taxes and what it spends \u2014 down to 5 percent of gross domestic product this year. It is also trying to keep its promise to get that figure below 3 percent of GDP, as required by EU rules, by 2029.<\/p>\n<p>An Economy Ministry official, who was granted anonymity in line with the French government\u2019s communication policy, said that \u20ac4 billion of spending in the general budget be frozen, while the remaining \u20ac2 billion of the freeze will affect the social security budget, which funds health spending and pensions.<\/p>\n<p>The government did not clarify which ministries will be the most affected, nor when the final decision will be taken on whether to enact spending cuts.<\/p>\n<p>Out of the total estimated \u20ac6 billion of costs arising from the crisis, \u20ac3.6 billion represents higher interest payments on government debt, \u20ac1 billion is linked to the negative effects of inflation, another \u20ac1 billion stems from extra military spending, while the rest covers financial support to French citizens and businesses.<\/p>\n<p>Later Tuesday, Prime Minister S\u00e9bastien Lecornu will announce an extension of <a href=\"https:\/\/pro.politico.eu\/news\/215734\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">fuel subsidies to the worst-affected sectors<\/a> \u2014 at least for May. Lescure said that the subsidies package for May could be broader and cover more sectors.<\/p>\n<p>Both the European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imf.org\/en\/blogs\/articles\/2026\/04\/17\/reforming-europe-under-pressure\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">warned against<\/a> extending broad subsidies,  both warning that they are highly expensive and difficult to phase out once introduced.
