{"id":543211,"date":"2026-04-21T17:36:08","date_gmt":"2026-04-21T17:36:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/543211\/"},"modified":"2026-04-21T17:36:08","modified_gmt":"2026-04-21T17:36:08","slug":"albanians-in-uk-scapegoated-by-rightwing-media-and-politicians-says-ambassador-immigration-and-asylum","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/543211\/","title":{"rendered":"Albanians in UK scapegoated by rightwing media and politicians, says ambassador | Immigration and asylum"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Albanians in Britain are paying the price in schools and workplaces of being scapegoated by rightwing media and politicians, the Albanian ambassador has said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Uran Ferizi also criticised Shabana Mahmood, the home secretary, for comments in parliament where she singled out Albanians when discussing problems with immigration.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThe obsession with demonising Albanians has reached the parliamentary dispatch box,\u201d the ambassador told the Guardian.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWhen a minister names a nationality in parliament, rather than a behaviour or a particular type of crime, they do not describe a problem, they create a target.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Ferizi, whose first experience of Britain was as teenage stowaway before he went on to read mathematics at Oxford University four years later, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2026\/apr\/21\/albanians-are-being-unfairly-demonised-in-immigration-debate\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">used a letter to the Guardian<\/a> to take issue with what he characterised as the misreporting of statistics in the Telegraph and other media in relation to the scale of Albanian involvement in UK crime.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">But he also broadened the criticism, implicitly taking issue with comments by politicians of overseas heritage, including Mahmood, Suella Braverman and others.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cIt is particularly dispiriting to see politicians who are themselves second-generation migrants attacking the migrants who have followed them into Britain,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The ambassador said the impact of negative portrayals of Albanians in the media and by politicians had been felt by the community, including workers, families and schoolchildren.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">A pattern had been established in the British press in which selective statistics were stripped of context and amplified, the ambassador wrote in his letter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cOpportunists, self-styled as experts, peddle theories and invented numbers about Albanians \u2013 particularly when elections are looming.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Ferizi cited analysis in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/media\/dailytelegraph\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Daily Telegraph<\/a> in 2024 which claimed that one in 50 Albanians in the UK was in prison, the worst rate of any nationality. However, he said this had been obtained by a process \u201cthat ignores the most elementary procedures for ensuring statistical accuracy\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cIf the number of Albanians in prison is weighted by the actual number of Albanians in the UK, not just by a very small subset of them, and controlled for sex, age and income, you get the result that Albanians are imprisoned at the same rate as native-born Britons. But that doesn\u2019t reinforce the prejudice that Albanians are an exceptionally criminal group, so it isn\u2019t printed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The ambassador likened the \u201cscapegoating\u201d of Albanians to the experience of previous groups of immigrants to the UK.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cIt was visited upon the Jews, the Irish, the Poles. Each time the narrative revealed the anxieties of the moment rather than the character of the people,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The ambassador\u2019s reference to Mahmood was in relation to her comments in parliament in November, when she set out controversial plans for the biggest shake-up of asylum laws in 40 years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Questioned by her fellow Labour MP <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/stella-creasy\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Stella Creasy<\/a> about the implications for children, the home secretary said context was needed about \u201cfailed asylum-seeking families\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThere are 700 Albanian families at the moment who have made asylum claims and whose asylum claims have failed,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Albanian people in the UK were reluctant to talk publicly about their negative experiences, but a number of cases were cited to the Guardian by the embassy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">They included a successful Albanian woman in the tech sector who was reluctant to share a LinkedIn post about an Albanian event after comments were made at work functions about Albanians being \u201ccriminals and dangerous\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">She and others also said they had experienced discrimination when it came to promotions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Another woman told of her husband attending a work function with other professionals, where he was asked what his background was.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">She said: \u201cWhen he said that he was Albanian, the woman who asked him was shocked and said\u2018I thought all Albanians were criminals.\u2019 He felt horrible but tried to brush it off.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Ariseld Muca, who heads a company in London\u2019s property maintenance sector, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reels\/DXXf5wRDCeB\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">posted on Instagram<\/a> about his experience, in which clients would constantly bring up news reports about \u201cAlbanian criminals\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cHow can I close the deal when my clients are asking where I am from and all they are hearing on the news is that Albanian criminals are taking over London?\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">A Home Office spokesperson said: \u201cWe highly value the Albanian community in the UK and our longstanding partnership with the Albanian government to crack down on illegal migration and criminality.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cAnyone, regardless of nationality, who is in the UK illegally should be in no doubt that they will be removed at the earliest opportunity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The Telegraph has been approached for comment.<\/p>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/www.instagram.com\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Albanians in Britain are paying the price in schools and workplaces of being scapegoated by rightwing media and&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":543212,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[3],"tags":[59,57,58,50,56,54,55],"class_list":{"0":"post-543211","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-united-kingdom","8":"tag-gb","9":"tag-great-britain","10":"tag-greatbritain","11":"tag-news","12":"tag-uk","13":"tag-united-kingdom","14":"tag-unitedkingdom"},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/543211","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=543211"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/543211\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/543212"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=543211"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=543211"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=543211"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
