Home favorite Jessica Bouzas Maneiro faces a struggling Beatriz Haddad Maia. Who will reach the second round?

WTA Madrid Day 1 Predictions
Laura Siegemund vs Irina-Camelia Begu

Head-to-head: Siegemund 4-1 Begu

Begu is back from her tennis hiatus. Last October, the Romanian announced that she was taking an indefinite break from the sport due to health and energy challenges. Siegemund is never an ideal opponent to face right out of the gate, especially on clay. Her slice-heavy baseline wrecks rhythm. And for Begu, this is a brutal opener just as she aims to find her feet after a lengthy absence.
Prediction: Siegemund in 3

Anna Bondar vs Viktorija Golubic

Head-to-head: first meeting

Bondar has seven wins from her last nine matches, and she’s played some solid tennis at the start of this swing. The Hungarian is coming off a quarterfinal run in Rouen, where she lost to an in-form Sorana Cirstea. Golubic is playing for the first time since that Billie Jean King Cup qualifying heartbreak for Switzerland against Czechia. Golubic lost two singles rubbers, and the 33-year-old’s solitary main draw win at the WTA level this season was in early February. This should be Bondar’s match to control.
Prediction: Bondar in 2

Peyton Stearns vs Lois Boisson

Head-to-head: first meeting

It’s been months since Lois Boisson last competed on Tour. The Frenchwoman has been out of action due to chronic injury issues, but she’s set to appear at long last. Her first match back is straight into the Madrid altitude. Stearns is having a decent season, although she’s been up-and-down form-wise since that title success in Austin. Stearns has recorded two match wins from her last three tournaments. That said, I don’t expect Boisson to snap back and find her best tennis immediately. Stearns handles clay well enough to ease into the second round.
Prediction: Stearns in 2

Beatriz Haddad Maia vs Jessica Bouzas Maneiro

Head-to-head: Bouzas Maneiro 2-0 Haddad Maia

Haddad Maia was a quarterfinalist in this tournament just two seasons ago. However, the Brazilian is coming off a dismal 2025 campaign, where she won just 16 matches and lost 26 times. Any signs of improvement have been futile so far, with Haddad Maia performing well below expectations in 2026. Madrid conditions should suit her massive ball striking, but right now, Haddad Maia’s confidence is shaky. Bouzas Maneiro has edged her twice in close matches and the Spaniard has home comfort as a huge advantage to notch a third win in the head-to-head.
Prediction: Bouzas Maneiro in 3

Main Photo Credit: Albert Cesare/The Enquirer / USA TODAY NETWORK

Day 1 at the WTA Madrid Open features a plethora of entertaining matches.
