Welsh fly-half Sam Davies’ “brutal” season in France has been “finally put to bed” with the Grenoble star undergoing a minor surgery.<\/p>\n
The 32-year-old enjoyed successive standout campaigns in the Pro D2 after leaving Welsh rugby behind in 2023, being named the best player in the league in his debut season before helping his side to finish top of the table by racking up 237 points last term.<\/p>\n
However, this season has been nothing short of a disaster for the eight-cap Wales international, who has been limited to just two appearances over the whole campaign.<\/p>\n

However, after cutting his nose against Provence the following week, things soon started to go wrong.<\/p>\n Days later, the ex-Ospreys and Dragons back was left in agonising pain and struggling to move, with doctors later diagnosing him with a staph infection, which had reached his bones.<\/p>\n While he has now recovered, the scary experience wiped out the remainder of his season, which is now set to end with him going under the knife again this week.<\/p>\n Taking to Instagram, Davies has admitted that this season has been “tough mentally”, but added that he has been able to gain perspective and will return for the 2026\/27 campaign “hungrier, stronger and with a point to prove”.<\/p>\n “Been a brutal season,” he wrote. “Body\u2019s taken a beating and next week I go in for a small surgery that\u2019ll finally put this season to bed.<\/p>\n “Not gonna lie – it\u2019s been tough mentally too. But it\u2019s also shown me what really matters.<\/p>\n “My wife has been my rock, and watching our 1-year-old daughter grow this year has put everything into perspective. Rugby doesn\u2019t define me – they do.”I\u2019m switching off now to heal properly,” he added. “But don\u2019t mistake quiet for weakness. I\u2019m coming back next season hungrier, stronger, and with a point to prove. See you on the other side. #RoadToRecovery #FamilyFirst #NeverDone.”<\/p>\n Welsh captain ruled out<\/p>\n Wales captain Kate Williams has been ruled out of her side’s Women’s Six Nations<\/a> clash with England this weekend.<\/p>\n The back rower will miss the meeting with the world champions at Ashton Gate on Saturday after being forced off in the second half of her side’s 38-7 defeat to France last weekend with a leg problem.<\/p>\n She will be replaced as skipper for the match by flanker Bethan Lewis, who last led Wales out against Canada at last summer’s Rugby World Cup<\/a>.<\/p>\n Williams’ co-captain, Alex Callender, has already been ruled out of the Six Nations campaign as she recovers from an ankle injury.<\/p>\n “It’s always a massive honour to put on the jersey and to be able to lead the girls out against England,” said Lewis as her appointment as skipper in Bristol was confirmed.<\/p>\n “We have absolutely nothing to lose. I think we’ve shown a lot of progress in terms of performance. Obviously it’s not the complete performance that we’re working towards, but what better team to go up against than England to really put our stall out?<\/p>\n “We’ve had a good look at ourselves, taking some learnings from last week, and hopefully we can kick on again this week.”<\/p>\n Head coach Seann Lynn, who will name his team on Thursday, also provided a mixed injury update on centre Carys Cox and wing Seren Singleton, with the latter fit to play despite leaving the field with her arm in a sling against France.<\/p>\n “Carys isn’t going to be in contention this week, however she will be when we go up against Ireland and Italy,” he said of Cox, who was a late withdrawal from the France defeat after taking a knock in training.<\/p>\n “Seren has been in training and has been training really well, so that’s a positive for us.<\/p>\n Welsh side win 81-0<\/p>\n Cardiff University<\/a> Women thumped Swansea<\/a> University 81-0 as they ran in 13 tries in their Varsity showdown at Cardiff<\/a> Arms Park.<\/p>\n While they couldn’t quite match their brutal 114-7 win in the same fixture at the Principality Stadium last year, Cardiff were ruthless as they dominated the fixture to inflict a nilling on their rivals.<\/p>\n The hosts were two tries up within 10 minutes after fly-half Emily Hay wriggled free of a tackle to cross under the posts and number eight Poppy Tyrrell powered over to double her side’s lead.<\/p>\n Three more tries quickly followed in the opening quarter, with Isobel Jones getting on the end of a string of passes to touch down, before wing Mouse Robinson sped clear down the right flank to score and tighthead Daisy Bateman powered through five defenders to crash over the line.<\/p>\n Cardiff, who were also aided by the boot of Hay from the tee, were to bring their try tally to seven before half-time as inside centre Daisy Farmer crossed before Eva Lewis was in the right place at the right time to run it in after a powerful break from Karolina Thomas, who was playing in her sixth Varsity match.<\/p>\n While Swansea can be credited for not letting their heads drop, the second half started as the first had ended, with Amelia Hetherington bursting through the defence on her first touch of the ball to score five minutes after the restart.<\/p>\n Tilly Conway then bundled over after a Swansea kick bounced off their own posts and into Cardiff’s hands, with Hetherington grabbing her second and Zoe Cross going over in the left corner before the hour mark.<\/p>\n The game would end with 12 different players on the scoresheet, with Ffion James and Cleo Pallister-Turley both crossing late on to seal another commanding win for Cardiff, who also sealed the overall Varsity shield earlier in the day.<\/p>\n Follow all of our channels to ensure you stay up to date with the latest Welsh rugby news.
