Even Chlo\u00eb Sevigny<\/a>\u2014quirky, award-winning actor and one of fashion\u2019s most cherished It girls since the \u201990s\u2014struggles with the impossible beauty standards that continue to plague our society.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think because I\u2019m so involved in fashion, there\u2019s a pressure to maintain a sense of whatever it is that I\u2019ve cultivated,\u201d she says in her May cover story for Harper\u2019s Bazaar<\/a>. \u201cYou know what I mean? And so that can sometimes be challenging, and wanting to not disappoint people with my looks.\u201d<\/p>\n

At 51, Sevigny is still walking runways (Miu Miu, this March<\/a>), and booking major film roles and fashion campaigns. She is stunning, cool, and widely respected, but in her mind, she doesn\u2019t feel like \u201ca part of Hollywood,\u201d and still makes herself flash a little smile in front of cameras to avoid showing her \u201cresting-bitch, dour, whatever, old-lady face.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe more challenging aspects and more annoying aspects are the way we\u2019re photographed now: phones, public, the lighting on the red carpet, the lighting on the runways. Nobody\u2019s doing anybody any favors,\u201d she said. \u201cThere\u2019s no more glamour or nuance to it. As an aging woman, it sounds less enjoyable to be a part of all that, because it just feels really vulnerable and exposed, and then you\u2019re just being picked apart on the internet.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sevigny has not gotten any \u201cmajor\u201d work done\u2014nothing that would truly change her face\u2014but she does have difficulty with the whole aging thing.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut I think also for women, if you were always touted as \u2018the most beautiful woman in the world,\u2019 it must be just really, really challenging [to age],\u201d she continued. \u201cI don\u2019t have that. I\u2019ve never felt that.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI never felt pretty my whole life,\u201d Sevigny said. \u201cThere were very pretty girls in my class, very conventionally pretty, especially within the \u201980s standards of what that meant. I knew that I wasn\u2019t. I\u2019m the unconventional beauty.\u201d<\/p>\n

Early on, Sevigny leaned into alternatives for fitting in\u2014funky fashion, bold haircuts, niche movie roles.
