{"id":547392,"date":"2026-04-24T01:04:09","date_gmt":"2026-04-24T01:04:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/547392\/"},"modified":"2026-04-24T01:04:09","modified_gmt":"2026-04-24T01:04:09","slug":"cheetahs-south-african-team-primed-for-stunning-urc-return","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/547392\/","title":{"rendered":"Cheetahs: South African team primed for stunning URC return"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>South Africa could add a fifth franchise to the United Rugby Championship with the Cheetahs lined up for a return to the competition, according to reports.<\/p>\n<p>The Bloemfontein-based outfit was removed from the PRO14 back in 2020 to accommodate the inclusion of the four other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.planetrugby.com\/team\/south-africa\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">South African<\/a> franchises (Bulls, Lions, Stormers, Sharks) following their exit from Super Rugby to create the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.planetrugby.com\/tournament\/united-rugby-championship\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">URC<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, they have been starved of regular top-level club rugby playing in the Currie Cup and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.planetrugby.com\/tournament\/challenge-cup\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Challenge Cup<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>However, a return to the URC could be on the cards with official word expected this Friday, according to a report in South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>Cheetahs return to top-flight rugby?<\/p>\n<p>According to a report by Afrikaans publication Rapport, the Cheetahs will find out whether they will participate in the URC this week, with a source suggesting that there is a positive feeling about the outcome.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s part of the conversation, but a lot of water still needs to be drained,\u201d a top rugby administrator told the publication.<\/p>\n<p>Due to the sensitivity of the negotiations, details are limited according to Rapport, but with Welsh Rugby set to cut down their number of participating clubs from four to three, the Cheetahs could be primed to fill that void.<\/p>\n<p>The Welsh Rugby Union are currently looking to map out the next stages of their proposal to cut one of the four professional regions by the end of the 2027\/28 season after negotiations between the WRU and Y11 Sport &amp; Media, the current owners of Ospreys, over a proposed takeover of Cardiff collapsed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"px-3 xs:px-4 mt-3 mb-2 font-semibold leading-snug text-base text-title\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.planetrugby.com\/news\/cardiff-takeover-bid-collapses-as-wru-double-down-on-need-for-stability-and-calmness-with-pra25-extension\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cardiff takeover bid collapses as WRU double-down on need for \u2018stability and calmness\u2019 with PRA25 extension<\/a><\/p>\n<p>WRU CEO Abi Tierney said: \u201cWe know we need to move to three clubs, nothing has changed there, for both financial and performance reasons, and so we can invest in the right way in our pathway to ensure the future of the game.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut this move brings stability to the system where it is needed and a calmness and assuredness to our plans for the future.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cY11 presented the best bid for Cardiff Rugby, but the WRU has ultimately concluded that it is in the best interests of Welsh rugby for Cardiff Rugby to remain under WRU ownership for now.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe remain undeterred from our ambition to move to three professional sides; this is necessary for the future of our game.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"px-3 xs:px-4 mt-3 mb-2 font-semibold leading-snug text-base text-title\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.planetrugby.com\/news\/springboks-stars-revisit-absolute-madness-behind-infamous-world-cup-photo-that-led-to-doping-accusations-we-lost-four-kilos-a-day\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Springboks stars revisit \u2018absolute madness\u2019 behind infamous World Cup photo that led to doping accusations: \u2018We lost four kilos a day\u2019<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Cheetahs, Griquas, and Pumas host international clubs<\/p>\n<p>The prospect of rejoining the URC comes after more good news in Bloemfontein after the Cheetahs announced the signing of double Rugby World Cup-winning Springboks scrum-half Faf de Klerk on a two-year deal.
