{"id":547522,"date":"2026-04-24T02:46:08","date_gmt":"2026-04-24T02:46:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/547522\/"},"modified":"2026-04-24T02:46:08","modified_gmt":"2026-04-24T02:46:08","slug":"sky-lights-up-with-cosmic-streak-of-nine-misinformation-as-anniversary-of-that-prophetic-afr-headline-approaches-amanda-meade","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/547522\/","title":{"rendered":"Sky lights up with cosmic streak of Nine misinformation as anniversary of \u2018that\u2019 prophetic AFR headline approaches | Amanda Meade"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Nine News had exciting news for Melbourne residents: a video showing a falling meteor lighting up the sky.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The video of the \u201cmeteor shower\u201d broadcast on the Today show featured a bright light streaking through the sky which the newsreader said was \u201cleaving locals scratching their heads as to what it could be\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cSome took to social media to speculate whether it\u2019s space junk, re-entering the atmosphere,\u201d newsreader Lizzie Pearl said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cHowever, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/science\/2026\/apr\/20\/starwatch-lyrid-meteor-shower-returns-to-the-spring-skies\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lyrid meteor shower<\/a> is the most likely answer, most visible across Victoria until the 25th of this month.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The video was picked up by Nine Entertainment\u2019s news websites for the Age and the Sydney Morning Herald with the headline \u201cMeteor lights up Melbourne sky\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">But if only Australia\u2019s biggest media company had asked one of its more than 500 reporters to pick up the phone and ask an astronomer to confirm if it was indeed a meteor.<\/p>\n<p>Nine News reported a meteor over the skies in Melbourne but the claim was debunked. Photograph: Nine News<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Observational astronomer Michael Brown from Monash University told Weekly Beast it appeared Nine had picked the video up from social media posts, where it was circulating as a meteor sighting on Sunday. \u201cThe problem is this is clearly not a meteor but an airplane contrail,\u201d Brown told Weekly Beast.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThis could have been debunked if they had contacted an astronomer (be it a professional or a dedicated amateur) but this obviously did not happen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThere\u2019s been an increasing number of posts of weather and astronomy groups with photos or videos of airplane contrails asking if they are rockets, meteors or space junk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">After inquiries by Beast, the videos were deleted across the three websites where they had sat for four days.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThanks for flagging this,\u201d a Nine spokesperson said. \u201cThe story has been taken down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ahead of its time<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">On Monday, it is the 12-year anniversary of one of the most prophetic newspaper headlines of our time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In 2014, the Australian Financial Review <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/australia-news-blog\/2014\/apr\/25\/apocalyptic-error-puts-the-f-in-afr\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">printed the apocalyptic<\/a> \u201cWORLD IS FUKT\u201d headline on the front of its Anzac weekend bumper special edition, alongside several other eyebrow-raising mistakes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">It was a special treat for the newspaper\u2019s Western Australian readers, given the issue was corrected before hitting the printing press in the east.<\/p>\n<p>double quotation markThe AFR\u2019s then editor-in-chief, Michael Stutchbury, apologised profusely at the time<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">While the mistake was never fully explained, it\u2019s clear an early front-page template, complete with dummy headlines, was accidentally sent to the printers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Weekly Beast understands the errant front page may actually have been picked up early enough to rectify, but reprinting it would have cost an estimated $10,000 because delaying delivery trucks is a costly endeavour.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The AFR\u2019s then editor-in-chief, Michael Stutchbury, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/mediawatch\/episodes\/not-so-total-recall\/9973532\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">apologised profusely at the time,<\/a> but we think he should have backed the dummy headline writer, who wasn\u2019t wrong, just early.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Twelve years on, as wars rage, inflation reignites and communities fracture, it feels fair to say: \u201cArms Buildup\/Buys Planes\/World is Fukt\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Vale James Valentine<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The outpouring of grief for musician and broadcaster James Valentine reminded Weekly Beast of the ABC audience\u2019s heartfelt reaction to the death of another ABC star, <a href=\"https:\/\/oa.anu.edu.au\/obituary\/olle-john-andrew-27542\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">journalist Andrew Olle<\/a>, who died suddenly 31 years ago at the age of 47.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Valentine, a broadcaster and saxophonist, died on Wednesday, sparking emotional tributes from colleagues and the public alike, who said he was not only a great talent but a very kind man.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Through the intimate power of radio, both men developed a strong relationship with their audience, who came to think of them as friends.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Olle, who was diagnosed with brain cancer, was a mornings presenter on Sydney\u2019s 702, then known as 2BL, but had a national profile as the host of Four Corners and the ABC\u2019s election coverage.<\/p>\n<p>The ABC will soon announce a public memorial for James Valentine. Photograph: Tess Peni\/Shutterstock<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The public filled the Sydney town hall to overflowing for his memorial service and the <a href=\"https:\/\/iview.abc.net.au\/show\/andrew-olle-media-lecture\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Andrew Olle Media Lecture<\/a> was established to honour his memory and raise funds for the Brain Cancer Collective.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">On ABC 702 on Thursday, listeners called in warm tributes after Hamish Macdonald announced the news. His children, Ruby and Roy, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-04-23\/702-abc-sydney-presenter-james-valentine-dies-cancer-\/106591720\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">told the ABC<\/a> they were touched by the glowing tributes flowing for their father.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The ABC chair, Kim Williams, said Valentine was a \u201ccreative polymath\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cHe was a writer, a terrific musician and a born radio artist, and somebody who had that very rare ability in radio, which produces so many gigantic egos, to use himself as a vehicle for his guests and a vehicle for his audience, rather than vice versa.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The ABC will announce public memorial arrangements and opportunities to honour Valentine, who died aged 64, in the coming days.<\/p>\n<p>Professional peculiarities<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">As details of Kyle Sandilands\u2019 on-air rants were revealed in documents filed in the federal court this week, the Daily Telegraph declared itself firmly in the shock jock\u2019s camp.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The defence documents filed by<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/media\/2026\/apr\/23\/kyle-sandilands-kiis-fm-rants-court-documents-ntwnfb\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> ARN Media allege<\/a> Sandilands repeatedly berated Kiis FM executives, the radio station\u2019s censors, critics of The Kyle and Jackie O Show and the Melbourne audience in expletive-laden rants.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The Telegraph editorial writers agreed with Sandilands, who has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/media\/2026\/mar\/23\/kyle-sandilands-arn-kiis-fm-termination-court-fight\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">told the court<\/a> he was doing the job he was hired to do as a \u201crobust character\u201d, presenting a \u201cdeliberately provocative\u201d radio program.<\/p>\n<p>Kyle Sandilands outside the federal court in Sydney on Friday. You want a ballerina to dance. You want a chef to whip up a roast, and so on.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cAnd if you hire Kyle Sandilands as a radio presenter, you want him to behave like Kyle Sandilands.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cYet the shock jock\u2019s bosses are now using their hire\u2019s own words to justify his dismissal.
