(AP) \u2013 The <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/interstellar-comet-31atlas-earth-approach-nasa-627a50b44f7a81336c37ff5b8b32f589\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">comet that rambled past us from another star<\/a> last year likely originated in a cold, isolated corner of the galaxy that had yet to gel into its own solar system, astronomers <a href=\"https:\/\/rdcu.be\/fe682\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reported<\/a> Thursday.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/interstellar-comet-nasa-3cddd6210ba1177d4d0a80c04053190d\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Comet 3I\/ATLAS<\/a> is only the <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/new-comet-nasa-3iatlas-83646ec002106c8ff89757330c69bfe8\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">third interstellar visitor<\/a> to be confirmed and quite possibly the oldest.<\/p>\n<p>Scientists estimate it could be up to 11 billion years old, more than twice as old as the Sun.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/1763466673_578_0.jpg\" alt=\"YouTube Thumbnail\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\" class=\"youtube-thumbnail-preview\" loading=\"lazy\"\/> frameborder=&#8221;0\u2033 allow=&#8221;accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share&#8221; referrerpolicy=&#8221;strict-origin-when-cross-origin&#8221; allowfullscreen&gt;<\/p>\n<p>A team led by the University of Michigan used the ALMA observatory in Chile&#8217;s Atacama Desert to examine the comet last fall.<\/p>\n<p>The errant but harmless iceball was discovered last summer, giving NASA and the European Space Agency plenty of time to aim multiple space telescopes at it as it <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/interstellar-comet-nasa-b9df6568efee22c02b722a87377d30db\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">zoomed past Mars<\/a> in October and made its closest approach to Earth in December.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s now well past  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/the-weirdest-facts-about-jupiter\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73113\" data-postid=\"199139\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">Jupiter<\/a> on its way out of our Solar System for good, still visible only to the professionals.<\/p>\n<p>In the study, scientists said they detected extremely high amounts of deuterium, or heavy hydrogen, in comet 3I\/ATLAS&#8217;s water.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/comet-3IATLAS-water-has-a-remarkably-high-content-of-deuterium-642x479.jpg\" alt=\"An illustration shows the interstellar comet 3I\/ATLAS in the foreground with an inset revealing its water has both hydrogen and deuterium atoms. This form of hydrogen is comparatively less abundant in our Solar System.
