{"id":549026,"date":"2026-04-24T22:17:11","date_gmt":"2026-04-24T22:17:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/549026\/"},"modified":"2026-04-24T22:17:11","modified_gmt":"2026-04-24T22:17:11","slug":"jollys-distinctive-mock-tudor-architecture-set-to-be-replaced","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/549026\/","title":{"rendered":"Jolly\u2019s distinctive \u2018Mock Tudor\u2019 architecture set to be replaced"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A distinctive feature of the historic Jolly\u2019s store in Bath is having to be replaced as it is in such a poor state.<br \/>\n<img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-117033\" class=\"size-full wp-image-117033\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/jollys-store-rear-cred-bf.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1540\" height=\"940\"  \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-117033\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Work is well under way at the Jolly\u2019s store in Bath<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Extensive restoration work and repairs have been taking place at the store since it closed in February 2025 after more than 200 years.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Bath &amp; North East Somerset Council owns the site, which Morleys Stores will be taking over \u2013 keeping the Jolly\u2019s name \u2013 once work is complete.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Jolly\u2019s is an interconnected terrace of Grade II listed buildings on Milsom Street and John Street. The latest application for listed building consent is to carry out internal and external alterations for repair and restoration works to the cantilevered timber facade at No.10 John Street.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A report says that due to extensive problems, the best thing to do is replace the timber frame with a matching design using more robust construction and weathering details.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It says: \u201cThe proposals enable the cantilevered timber frame jetty to be reinstated with its newly-restored, historically significant ground-floor window. This provides continuity with its historic visual appearance.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe jetty\u2019s aesthetic significance as \u2018Tudorbethan\u2019, or \u2018Mock Tudor\u2019 style has been faithfully preserved in the proposals.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A decision on the application for listed building consent is expected next month.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Morleys confirmed last month that the store is due to fully reopen in October.
