EastEnders<\/a>\u2019\u00a0Phil Mitchell<\/a>\u2019s\u00a0(Steve McFadden<\/a>) battle with his mental health<\/a> was one of the most harrowing soap plots in recent memory.<\/p>\n Though long-term viewers will have seen Phil deal with both alcoholism and crack addiction and take on a \u2018who\u2019s who\u2019 of East End villains, gangsters and all around wrong\u2019un\u2019s, his war against his own head proved to be the most impactful, as depression<\/a> gave way to psychosis and, ultimately, suicidal ideation.<\/p>\n Following the breakdown of his marriage<\/a> to Kat Slater<\/a>\u00a0(Jessie Wallace<\/a>) and the arrest and incarceration<\/a> of son, Ben Mitchell<\/a> (Max Bowden<\/a>), Phil found himself increasingly isolated.<\/a><\/p>\n His loneliness and reluctance to open up to anybody soon developed into terrifyingly vivid hallucinations<\/a> of his family members, both living and deceased, as he revisited and relived the trauma of his childhood.<\/p>\n As he spiralled to his lowest point, Linda Carter<\/a>\u00a0(Kellie Bright<\/a>), Nigel Bates<\/a>\u00a0(Paul Bradley<\/a>) and a recently returned Grant Mitchell<\/a>\u00a0(Ross Kemp<\/a>) raced to find Phil as he planned to end his own life.<\/a><\/p>\n \t\t After being admitted into a mental health facility to receive care as an inpatient, Phil initially struggled to engage with the treatment, keeping to himself as he waited for his medication to begin working. Fellow patient Gaz (Keith Allen)<\/a>, though, encouraged him to open up, and Phil began to shed his \u2018hardman\u2019 persona and address his problems with real vulnerability.<\/p>\n Phil discharged himself from the facility and continued his recovery in the community, while also stepping up for his best friend, Nigel, as he battled early-onset dementia<\/a>.<\/p>\n Phil pledged to become Nigel\u2019s primary carer<\/a>, alongside Nigel\u2019s wife, Julie<\/a>\u00a0(Karen Henthorn<\/a>), and the two did everything possible to ensure he was supported and looked after, until his symptoms became too difficult to manage at home and they were forced to make the heart breaking decision to place him into a care home.<\/p>\n Phil has since been unable to visit Nigel after saying a heart-wrenching goodbye<\/a> on the day he moved in to the specialist facility.<\/p>\n \t\t \t\t Nigel, as expected, has continued to deteriorate and has struggled with pneumonia, which is set to ultimately claim his life<\/a> next week. Prior to his passing, though, Mark Fowler Jr<\/a>\u00a0(Stephen Aaron-Sipple<\/a>) decides to summon his dad, Grant, back to Walford to say his final goodbye, and reunite him with Phil and their sister, Sam<\/a>\u00a0(Kim Medcalf<\/a>).<\/p>\n \u2018I think Grant is desperate to see his son,\u2019 Ross says on his reaction to the unexpected phone call. \u2018They\u2019ve never had a relationship, and he may see this as the first step towards potentially building one. <\/p>\n \t\t\t\tDon’t miss a Soaps scoop! Over time, though, he begins to realise that Phil may be struggling himself.\u2019<\/p>\n As Grant tries everything to get through to him as Nigel enters his final hours, it\u2019s a race against time to reunite the best friends before it\u2019s too late.<\/p>\n \t\t \u2018Eventually, the brothers sit down and have a heartfelt conversation and clear the air,\u2019 Ross said. \u2018These scenes were long and intense, and it was brilliant to film them with Steve.\u2019<\/p>\n After Nigel\u2019s passing, Phil is taken aback to return to the Square and discover the residents have decided to throw a celebration of Nigel\u2019s life.
