{"id":549829,"date":"2026-04-25T10:11:14","date_gmt":"2026-04-25T10:11:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/549829\/"},"modified":"2026-04-25T10:11:14","modified_gmt":"2026-04-25T10:11:14","slug":"east-lothian-boxing-club-completes-remarkable-return","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/549829\/","title":{"rendered":"East Lothian Boxing Club completes remarkable return"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n  East Lothian Boxing Club welcomed a new generation of boxers through its doors earlier this month.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The club, founded in 2009, has signed a long-term lease for the free use of a large gym space at Joe\u2019s Gym, a new community centre on Haddington\u2019s Hospital Road.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Callum Colquhoun, who has been involved with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eastlothiancourier.com\/news\/25984843.east-lothian-boxing-club-holding-launch-event-new-home\/?ref=ed_direct\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">boxing club<\/a> since its formation, was delighted to see it back on its feet.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <img   width=\"100%\"\/>A large crowd turned out for the opening of the boxing club&#8217;s new home (Image: Contributed)\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The committee chairman said: \u201cWe are thinking of our first show already.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cWe are very, very confident; everybody is confident.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cIt is early days but there is lots of interest from young boxers and some former boxers that are coming back.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cThe potential is just enormous.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The boxing club had found a solid footing in the national boxing community, developing both amateur and professional champions.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  In 2013, it was named Club of the Year at the Amateur Boxing Scotland Awards.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  However, the club, which was previously based off Haddington\u2019s Mill Wynd, struggled when it lost its home.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Mr Colquhoun was pleased to see the new long-term lease in place after fearing that the club might not return.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <img   width=\"100%\"\/>Sessions have already proved busy at the East Lothian Boxing Club&#8217;s new home in Haddington (Image: Contributed)\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  He said: \u201cInitially, I hoped right at the start that it was going to happen sooner rather than it did.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cThen, especially during Covid, I thought that was the end and it was not going to happen; I was not sure what was going to happen.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Premises were found and there is now a renewed optimism about the club.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Volunteers from across the community have worked tirelessly to transform the premises, which now not only caters for boxing but also has studio space for other classes.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Keith Colgan will head up the boxing programme, joined by former professional boxer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eastlothiancourier.com\/sport\/15710167.boxer-iain-trotter-reflects-on-debut-pro-year\/?ref=ed_direct\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Iain Trotter<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  A team of 10 volunteers is also in place to help run classes throughout the week.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The new gym \u2013 named after Haddington\u2019s own keen sportsman Joe Forte, who died in 2024 \u2013 officially opened earlier this month.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Mr Colquhoun said: \u201cThere was a very good turnout.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cJosh Taylor [former world boxing champion] was there and by all accounts it was a fantastic day.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eastlothiancourier.com\/news\/25641276.councillor-tom-trotter-backs-plans-boxing-club-new-home\/?ref=ed_direct\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Councillor Tom Trotter<\/a>, who represents the town on East Lothian Council, told members of Haddington and District Community Council that he had visited the previous evening and it was \u201cchock-a-block\u201d.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  He said: \u201cI think there were three sessions last night but the beauty of having a bigger place is a couple of things can happen at the same time.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cFitness can take place at the same time as laddies doing sparring.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cThere is a date provisionally booked in November to have a show in the Corn Exchange.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cIf we get anywhere near the success of days when the club was open in the past, we will be doing well.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"East Lothian Boxing Club welcomed a new generation of boxers through its doors earlier this month.
