{"id":549855,"date":"2026-04-25T10:32:08","date_gmt":"2026-04-25T10:32:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/549855\/"},"modified":"2026-04-25T10:32:08","modified_gmt":"2026-04-25T10:32:08","slug":"altman-apologizes-after-openai-failed-to-alert-police-before-fatal-canada-shooting-us-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/549855\/","title":{"rendered":"Altman apologizes after OpenAI failed to alert police before fatal Canada shooting | US news"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The head of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/openai\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">OpenAI<\/a> has written a letter apologizing that his company didn\u2019t alert law enforcement about the online behavior of a person who shot and killed eight people in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In the letter posted Friday, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/sam-altman\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sam Altman<\/a> expressed his deepest condolences to the entire community.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cI am deeply sorry that we did not alert law enforcement to the account that was banned in June,\u201d Altman said. \u201cWhile I know words can never be enough, I believe an apology is necessary to recognize the harm and irreversible loss your community has suffered.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The letter, dated Thursday, appeared on British Columbia premier David Eby\u2019s social media and also on the local news website Tumbler RidgeLines on Friday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">On 10 February, police say an 18-year-old alleged shooter, identified as Jesse Van Rootselaar, killed her 39-year-old mother, Jennifer Jacobs, and 11-year-old stepbrother, Emmett Jacobs, in their northern British Columbia home before heading to the nearby Tumbler Ridge Secondary School and opening fire, killing five children and an educator before killing herself.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Twenty-five people were also injured in the attack.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">After the incident, OpenAI came forward to say that last June the company identified Van Rootselaar\u2019s account using abuse detection efforts for \u201cfurtherance of violent activities\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The San Francisco technology company said it considered whether to refer the account to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police but determined at the time that the account activity didn\u2019t meet a threshold for referral to law enforcement. OpenAI banned the account in June for violating its usage policy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">At the time, Eby said it \u201clooks like\u201d OpenAI had the opportunity to prevent the mass shooting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In his letter, Altman said he had spoken with Tumbler Ridge mayor Darryl Krakowka and Eby and they \u201cconveyed the anger, sadness and concern\u201d felt in the community. It was agreed a public apology was warranted but time was needed for the community to grieve.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cI want to express my deepest condolences to the entire community,\u201d Altman said. \u201cNo one should ever have to endure a tragedy like this.
