Final Fantasy 14<\/a> is coming to Nintendo Switch 2<\/a> in August.<\/p>\n

Director and producer Naoki “Yoshi-P” Yoshida and Square Enix<\/a> CEO Takashi Kiryu revealed the news as part of Final Fantasy 14 Fan Fest 2026 overnight, playing the game on Switch 2 during a presentation.<\/p>\n

Interestingly, though, the Switch 2 edition of the hugely popular MMORPG will be a little different, requiring its own subscription on top of the one you may be paying for PC or console.<\/p>\n

As a compromise, Final Fantasy 14 on Switch 2 won’t need a Nintendo Online subscription to play it. Additionally, anyone with an active FF14 sub can purchase the Switch 2 one for 50 percent off the full price.<\/p>\n

“After discussions with Nintendo, it was decided that the Switch 2 version of Final Fantasy 14 would require a separate subscription,” Yoshi-P said through a translator (thanks, IGN<\/a>).<\/p>\n

“Again, this was decided after many months of discussions with Nintendo, and I understand that this is different to how we\u2019ve done things before.”<\/p>\n

FINAL FANTASY XIV will make its debut on the Nintendo Switch\u2122 2 in August 2026!<\/p>\n

“A week ago, I had this great idea to play the Switch 2 on stage here, and Nintendo kind of freaked out a little,\u201d Yoshi-P said.<\/p>\n

“They were like, ‘What?!’ But they cooperated and helped us so much to make this happen, so thank you, Nintendo, very much to help us make this happen on-stage today.”<\/p>\n

Earlier this week we learned Final Fantasy 14 is getting a new major update in Trail to the Heavens<\/a>. Patch 7.5 will bring new story quests, an alliance raid, limited job, and more.<\/p>\n

This update comes in the midst of Final Fantasy 14’s Dawntrail expansion, a new narrative arc that initially had players torn<\/a> having come from the many highs of Endwalker. Still, in time, it has managed to pick up Steam, listening to community feedback <\/a>as the MMO continues its life over a decade since its initial release.<\/p>\n

Fan response has been muted<\/a>, and while some like the idea of at least being able to do simple PvE activities on the go<\/a> for an additional fee, others are not so impressed<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Switch 2 version will launch in August, but we don’t have a firm release date yet. It’s also not yet clear how much the Switch 2’s subscription will cost.<\/p>\n
