Pilates instructors have some theories.<\/p>\n \u201cPilates has a certain visual language such as long lines, control and softness that some men interpret as \u2018feminine,\u2019 \u2018disciplined\u2019 or \u2018low-risk.\u2019 That\u2019s where the \u2018green flag\u2019 talk is coming from. Lacking proper equipment, Pilates improvised by attaching bedsprings to hospital bed frames. It flattens women who practice Pilates into a lifestyle aesthetic, she said, and co-opts wellness into a language of control in a subtle, insidious way.<\/p>\n \u201cPersonally, I don\u2019t feel offended so much as protective of the practice,\u201d she said. \u201cBecause Pilates, at its best, is about helping people feel strong, capable and at home in their bodies, not performing a specific kind of femininity for approval.\u201d<\/p>\n Zhane Dadson, a Pilates instructor in Philadelphia who goes by Coach Zha<\/a> online, feels similarly.<\/p>\n \u201cThe women I see in Pilates are rebuilding themselves,\u201d she told HuffPost. \u201cIt\u2019s not about fitting into someone else\u2019s idea of desirable. She isn\u2019t surprised that this type of man gravitates toward women who do Pilates (or at least their weirdly retrograde image of women who do Pilates).<\/p>\n \u201cManosphere types generally want someone who\u2019s fit, slim, generally white and also generally young. It\u2019s why they talk about women hitting \u2018the wall,\u2019\u201d Barnes told HuffPost. It\u2019s the reason they prefer Eastern European and Southeast Asian women; they consider such women more compliant and less influenced by feminism.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cSimilarly, I think there\u2019s this idea that women who do Pilates are perhaps a little bit softer or are into what young people are now calling the \u2018soft life,\u2019\u201d Barnes said.<\/p>\n \u201cSoft life\u201d is just the latest right-wing pipeline for Gen Z women.\u00a0On TikTok, creators promote rejecting hustle culture \u2015 and oftentimes work altogether \u2015 while encouraging women to pursue a life of ease and husband-provided luxury.<\/p>\n One video from such a creator shows the woman\u00a0grocery shopping, with the caption<\/a>, \u201cYou woke up one day and realized you\u2019re the Whole Foods-shopping, vacationing in Europe, Pilates-going wife.\u201d<\/p>\n This genre of influencers is the perfect companion to the trad husbands of the manosphere, because the women are willing to let men be in charge while they run the household.\u00a0Pilates and other \u201csoft life\u201d trappings are the latest window dressing for drawing women into the trad wife lifestyle.<\/p>\n \u201c\u2018Pilates girl\u2019 is almost a dog whistle now,\u201d Barnes said. \u201cBecause if the manosphere were to say what they really wanted in a woman, it would come across very badly.\u201d<\/p>\n Saying you want a \u201cPilates girl\u201d who values her health and staying fit sounds much better than saying, I need full control in the relationship and I\u2019m superficial and looks are the be-all, end-all for me, Barnes said.<\/p>\n Pilates Instructors Fight Back<\/p>\n The women of color Pilates instructors we talked to aren\u2019t going to give their beloved exercise over to manosphere-adjacent types so easily, though.<\/p>\n \u201cThe Pilates I know is adaptive, intuitive and rooted in making things work with what you have,\u201d said Tay Milburn, the owner and lead instructor at Fringe Pilates<\/a> in Brooklyn, New York.<\/p>\n When Milburn sees Pilates reduced to whether it makes someone look \u201clean\u201d or fit a certain aesthetic, it tells her that those people don\u2019t actually understand the method.<\/p>\n \u201cThey\u2019re engaging with it as an outcome for the male gaze, not as a wellness practice,\u201d she said. \u201cI think the current conversation is less about what Pilates actually is and more about how it\u2019s been marketed. At its core,\u00a0Pilates is a tool for connection, healing and strength.\u201d<\/p>\n They\u2019re intent on making the exercise more welcoming, too.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s true that it has had a reputation as being for white women,\u201d said Sonja R.
