{"id":550471,"date":"2026-04-25T19:28:16","date_gmt":"2026-04-25T19:28:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/550471\/"},"modified":"2026-04-25T19:28:16","modified_gmt":"2026-04-25T19:28:16","slug":"amazing-rebirth-of-plymouths-great-lost-rock-band-the-frozen-tear","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/550471\/","title":{"rendered":"Amazing rebirth of Plymouth&#8217;s great lost rock band The Frozen Tear"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The future is looking bright for Plymouth\u2019s great lost rock band The Frozen Tear &#8211; 55-years after they broke up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The psychedelic rockers supported acts such as Fleetwood Mac, The Move, Amen Corner and the Foundations and had their only single, You Know What Has to Be, played by John Peel on Radio One in 1969.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">It is now a collectors\u2019 item and was<a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.plymouthherald.co.uk\/news\/plymouth-news\/plymouth-bands-long-lost-sixties-364643\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_self\"> re-released in 2017<\/a> after a two page spread on the band in Record Collector.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">But now there is a new The Frozen Tear product: a four track EP released by <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.plymouthherald.co.uk\/whats-on\/music-nightlife\/plymouths-role-rock-bands-rise-10661143\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_self\">Devon\u2019s In a Spin Vinyl<\/a> and pressed by Plymouth\u2019s DMS.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The Acetate EP contains four tracks, taken from an old acetate disc rescued by band member Tony Way\u2019s son Rob from a record dealer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Recorded in 1969, they were supposed to be the band\u2019s next release, but they never reached the pressing plant and the band split in 1971.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/0_The-Frozen-Tear-2-1jpeg.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p aria-label=\"The Acetate EP, by Plymouth band The Frozen Tear, released by In a Spin Vinyl in April 2026\" class=\"ImageCaption_caption-title__ccyQU\" data-testid=\"caption-title\">The Acetate EP, by Plymouth band The Frozen Tear, released by In a Spin Vinyl in April 2026(Image: William Telford)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">A lavish inset with the new seven-inch vinyl has pictures and tells the history of the band and also contains a copy of a rejection letter from The Beatles\u2019s Apple label &#8211; another sought after rarity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The four tracks &#8211; You Do Something, Train Comes Train Goes, I Need Someone and Cookie Crumbles &#8211; showcase the band\u2019s distinctive blend of blues-infused psychedelia, with two of the tracks never having been released before on any format.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The cover, designed by Bristol\u2019s VertiWorks, shows the four band members as they looked back in 1969 &#8211; snapped on a bench in Blockhouse Park.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">And all of them are still alive, now aged in their seventies. Two even still live in Plymouth: bassist and singer Tony and rhythm guitarist John Morgan, both aged 74.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Lead guitarist Leeson Burt now resides in Wiltshire and drummer Paul Riley has emigrated to New Zealand, and told PlymouthLive: &#8220;Maybe Frozen Tear could come alive again and tour NZ. Wouldn&#8217;t that be something.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Tony said: \u201cPutting out the Acetate EP as it was originally recorded is really nice, satisfying and long overdue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cWith two tracks never having been released before it feels like a completion of the band\u2019s musical output.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/0_The-Frozen-Tear-team-1-3jpeg.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p aria-label=\"The In a Spin Vinyl team behind the release of The Acetate EP by Plymouth band The Frozen Tear, first recorded in 1969 but newly pressed in 2026. L-R: Jon Way, Rob Way and John Griffiths(Image: William Telford)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">John Griffiths, from Exeter, works with Tony\u2019s sons Rob and Jon Way on the In a Spin project, which finds, repackages and re-releases classic lost band\u2019s work from the 1960s and 1970s.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">John said: \u201cAbout a year ago Rob and Jon asked if I would consider doing the Acetate EP and I said \u2018absolutely\u2019. I sat down with Tony and found out what he wanted to do. It\u2019s a labour of love.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cThe Frozen Tear was a great band and should have done a lot better. They sent their cassette to the Beatles\u2019 offices in London, but it was rejected. They did get a very nice letter back though.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Tony added: \u201cNot many Beatles\u2019 fans have seen a rejection letter and quite a few are getting excited.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">John said the reaction to the record has been very positive, particularly with The Frozen Tear\u2019s first single being so hard to get hold of.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Only 250 copies have been printed and are expected to sell well.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s not about making money but putting stuff out that should be in the public eye,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Frozen Tear started in 1963 in Plymouth, at that time called the Four-Ways, with Tony saying: \u201cWe were doing Shadows\u2019 stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">They changed their name to The Frozen Tear in 1967. John Morgan is no longer involved in music but Tony has had a long career in bands.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">He almost joined rockers Uriah Heep in the early 1970s and was in Fab Four-tribute Backbeat from 1994 to 2013, and said: \u201cWe went on for longer than the Beatles.\u201d He is currently playing in a three-piece outfit called Revamp.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/0_The-Frozen-Tear-team-1-1jpeg.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p aria-label=\"\" class=\"ImageCaption_caption-title__ccyQU\" data-testid=\"caption-title\">(Image: William Telford)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">In a Spin Vinyl has released 10 singles now from lost classic rock and pop acts.
