Since the DCEU timeline didn’t get full chance to delve into the story of its Batman – with Ben Affleck’s Dark Knight having no solo movie of his own – the DCU is the first real chance we have to see what the Caped Crusader could be like in a wide-reaching live-action cinematic universe, setting a high bar in terms of fan hopes and expectations.

Given the multitude of different ways Batman has been depicted over the years in the world of the comics, it’s inevitable that the DCU’s Batman can’t be the epitome of every different take on the hero. However, the DCU’s current track record of adapting aspects of its heroes that have been less focused on in previous live-action iterations does paint a promising picture when it comes to this next era for DC.

This picture is in some ways perhaps best painted by our first proper look at the upcoming Clayface movie thanks to the film’s first trailer. Though there’s much we’ve yet to learn about the body horror story of Clayface, the early glimpses we’ve gotten at its narrative and tone set up a scenario wherein the DCU is already primed to approach Batman and his dynamic with his foes in a decidedly interesting way.

Clayface’s Trailer Already Tees Up What Audiences Will Want From The DCU’s Batman

Matt Hagen’s (Tom Rhys Harries) face drooping in Clayface

While the Clayface trailer doesn’t feature Batman himself – and the movie may well not feature even a brief glimpse of the Caped Crusader – these early snippets provide a look at how the film will continue to help refine audience perception of the world of Gotham and what viewers want from the DC Universe when it comes to the Dark Knight.

Movie-going audiences are already teed up to see Batman’s villains as more three-dimensional characters following the likes of Joker, The Suicide Squad, and Joker: Folie à deux, and Clayface’s trailer only furthers this concept.

Though the film does appear to be a villain origin story of sorts – meaning it’s very possible it will feature its protagonist doing some questionable and immoral things – seeing the injuries that Matt Hagen endures, and the body horror of his transformation into a shapeshifter whose skin becomes more like clay than flesh, makes it essentially impossible to not sympathize with the character on some level after watching the trailer footage.

Setting things up so people’s first film exposure to the DCU’s Gotham is a more sympathetic look at one of the villains Batman will face naturally establishes a scenario wherein people will want a version of Batman who does also empathize with his foes, especially since this kind of Batman is one that’s in many of DC’s best comic stories. Thankfully, Clayface is not the only DCU release helping pave the way for this take on Batman.

The DCU’s Release Roster Is Setting Up A Very Exciting Version Of The Dark Knight

Thus far, all of the DCU’s releases have focused on showing the human side of characters who are ostracized from society in some way because of their powers or appearance, which ties in well to the official Gods & Monsters tagline given to the first chapter of the DCU timeline.

This is most clear in Creature Commandos and Superman, wherein the central characters’ struggles with how the world treats them even when they wish to do the right thing are a reoccurring and focal aspect of their plots. That said, even Peacemaker season 2 explores this idea, with Chris Smith confronting the issues with his “heroic” beliefs via his experience in another universe, and with the introduction of an alternate universe wherein Lex Luthor intends to cruelly exile metahumans also falling into similar territory.

Given all the DCU has done up to this point to set up a world wherein the unfairness of people being mistreated because of their powers or mutations is a common theme, and wherein the morality of superheroism and the reality of how morally complex such a role would be has been much explored, it’s almost impossible to imagine the DCU’s Batman movie and story not following a similar trajectory.

Indeed, the first glimpse we’ve gotten of the DCU’s Batman – via Doctor Phosphorus’ backstory in Creature Commandos – does itself support this idea, since the Dark Knight only shows up when Phosphorus has fully committed to a life of crime, and even earlier on in his career, appears to have been focused on taking the Doctor and his minions out as quickly and non-lethally as possible.

With all of this backdrop in mind, it seems Clayface’s exploration of Matt Hagen and his arc will be very in line with what’s come before in the DCU. This should further help to establish a world wherein the DCU’s Batman needs to be a truly capable fighter, but also needs to understand the hardships his enemies have been through, and still root for them on some level, much in the way Superman does for even Lex Luthor in Superman itself.

Clayface

                                            Release Date

         October 23, 2026

                                            Director

               James Watkins

Clayface‘s new movie trailer helps set up more about what to expect from future depictions of Gotham and…

[27
96,2839,56,54,55
0":"post-550473","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-movies","8":"tag-entertainment","9":"tag-movies","10":"tag-uk","11":"tag-united-kingdom","12":"tag-unitedkingdom
["GET
