The owner of one of the largest campsites in Europe has been remembered as a loving family man. George Workman, a director and owner of Shell Island, near Llanbedr in Gwynedd on Wales’ east coast<\/a>, has died, his family confirmed on Saturday.<\/p>\n

In a Facebook<\/a> post on the campsite’s official page, the family said: “We are deeply saddened as a family to announce the passing of George Workman. George was not only a director and owner of Shell Island, but also a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle.<\/p>\n

“Many people will remember George for his love of Oktoberfest, proudly leading the parade each year with a smile on his face, and for always taking the time to chat with campers and boat owners.<\/p>\n

“He was also a devoted Freemason with his local lodge in Barmouth, where he spent much of his life helping to raise money for charitable causes. George will be dearly missed by us all.”<\/p>\n

NorthWalesLive<\/a> reported that the news sparked hundreds of tributes to the popular owner.<\/p>\n

One person wrote: “So sad to hear this sad news. George was a big part of Shell life, with his big friendly smile and roaring laugh in the bar belting out Elvis tunes. My heartfelt thoughts are with Gwen, Rob Christina and all the family. RIP George Shell wont be the same without you.”<\/p>\n

Another said: “Oh no how sad. He was lovely. Sending my condolences to the family, friends and colleagues.”<\/p>\n

Another added: “Condolences to the Workman family . Fond memories of children\u2019s disco\u2019s back in the 70s- 80\u2019s and conversations in the bar in much years later.”<\/p>\n

A Shell Island visitor said: “Sorry to hear this, I\u2019ll for ever remember George leading parade at Oktoberfest. Thinking of you all…”<\/p>\n

Funeral details will follow at a later date, the family said.<\/p>\n
