{"id":551815,"date":"2026-04-26T15:18:11","date_gmt":"2026-04-26T15:18:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/551815\/"},"modified":"2026-04-26T15:18:11","modified_gmt":"2026-04-26T15:18:11","slug":"rachel-reeves-blasted-as-economically-illiterate-amid-national-insurance-hikes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/551815\/","title":{"rendered":"Rachel Reeves blasted as &#8216;economically illiterate&#8217; amid National Insurance hikes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>British employers have warned Chancellor Rachel Reeves\u2019 decision to raise National Insurance contributions has triggered a hiring crisis.<\/p>\n<p>Business owners are branding the policy &#8220;economically illiterate&#8221; as job vacancies fall to their lowest level in nearly five years.<\/p>\n<p>Firms grappling with elevated National Insurance bills and increased wage pressures are increasingly turning to automation rather than hiring new staff, according to industry experts.<\/p>\n<p>Young people are bearing the brunt of the tightening labour market, with the number of those not in education, employment or training approaching one million.<\/p>\n<p>Specialists have cautioned an entire generation risks being excluded from the workforce, raising concerns about long-term economic and social consequences.<\/p>\n<p>The latest quarterly figures show vacancies have dropped to 711,000, marking a decline of 29,000 compared with the previous quarter.<\/p>\n<p>This represents the lowest vacancy level since the period between February and April 2021, with a 3.9 per cent fall recorded between October and December 2025.<\/p>\n<p>The number of employees on company payrolls has also declined, falling by 74,000 in the 12 months to February 2026.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"b814a\" data-rm-shortcode-id=\"109eddd2508108ba367ba468ea89cfc7\" data-rm-shortcode-name=\"rebelmouse-image\" class=\"rm-shortcode rm-lazyloadable-image \" lazy-loadable=\"true\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns='http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg'%20viewBox='0%200%201024%20683'%3E%3C\/svg%3E\" data-runner-src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/1777216690_240_reeves.jpg\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" alt=\"Reeves\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Rachel Reeves criticised as UK job vacancies hit five-year low<\/p>\n<p> | <\/p>\n<p>GETTY<\/p>\n<p>Between December 2025 and February 2026, payrolled workers decreased by 87,000 compared with the same period a year earlier.<\/p>\n<p>Early estimates for March 2026 suggest the total has fallen to 30.3 million, down 65,000 on an annual basis.<\/p>\n<p>Liz McKeown, director of economic statistics at the ONS, said: &#8220;The number of workers on payroll remained broadly flat in recent periods, reflecting ongoing weak hiring.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Vacancies fell to their lowest level in almost five years, but with unemployment also falling the number of vacancies per unemployed person remains broadly unchanged.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Unemployment fell to 4.9 per cent, down from 5.2 per cent in the previous quarter.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"7fed3\" data-rm-shortcode-id=\"a66c95e83d41f72897dcd3501be54b2b\" data-rm-shortcode-name=\"rebelmouse-image\" class=\"rm-shortcode rm-lazyloadable-image \" lazy-loadable=\"true\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns='http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg'%20viewBox='0%200%201516%20949'%3E%3C\/svg%3E\" data-runner-src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/four-graphs-prove-the-uk-economy-is-in-serious-trouble.png\" width=\"1516\" height=\"949\" alt=\"Four graphs prove the UK economy is in serious trouble\"\/>Four graphs prove the UK economy is in serious trouble | GB NEWS<\/p>\n<p>Tony Redondo, founder of Newquay-based Cosmos Currency Exchange, said: &#8220;I have no intention of hiring anytime soon. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Iran war&#8217;s impact on energy prices, supply bottlenecks and inflation have not helped, but the root cause is this Government&#8217;s economically illiterate policies, which have left employers facing record taxes and regulatory burden.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Mr Redondo said business owners are increasingly shifting focus away from growth as conditions tighten.<\/p>\n<p>He said: &#8220;Most UK business owners I speak with have shifted from growth to survival, turning to AI agents to fill entry-level roles.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Rohit Parmar-Mistry, founder of AI consultancy Pattrn Data, said: &#8220;Most firms are not replacing whole teams overnight. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What they are doing is freezing junior hiring, stretching existing staff further, and using automation to avoid adding headcount.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Mr Parmar-Mistry warned entry-level roles, which traditionally provide early career development, are becoming less available.<\/p>\n<p>Katrina Young, Chief Technology Officer at KYC Digital, said: &#8220;Businesses are not replacing junior staff with AI systems.
