Rory McIlroy has decided to skip the Cadillac Championship. The PGA Tour<\/a> Signature Event will be held at Donald <\/a>Trump’s<\/a> Miami course, and the US president had wished the Northern Irishman would feature.<\/p>\n

Earlier this month, McIlroy made history<\/a> when he became just the fourth golfer to go back-to-back at the Masters. He saw off all challengers to retain his title at Augusta National and bag \u00a33.3million<\/a>.<\/p>\n

As he did last year, the 36-year-old decided to take a brief hiatus<\/a> after the win and bypassed the RBC Heritage last weekend and the Zurich Classic. The Cadillac at Trump National Doral is up next, and of the \u00a315m purse, the winner of this event in Florida would earn \u00a32.7m.<\/p>\n

But McIlroy won’t be in contention for that prize<\/a> as he has opted to skip the competition altogether. President Trump won’t be best pleased, after he expressed the hope<\/a> that he’d see McIlroy on the Blue Monster course.<\/p>\n

After McIlroy went back-to-back at the Masters, Trump used his Truth Social platform to send a message to the golf<\/a> star. He wrote: “Congratulations to Rory McIlroy on another Great Championship, The Masters!<\/p>\n

“He performed tremendously under intense pressure, something which few people would be able to even think about doing. With each year, Rory is becoming more and more a LEGEND! I look forward to watching him compete in two weeks at Doral.”<\/p>\n

But McIlroy will not be competing at Doral, one of 16 golf venues owned by the president, with another five soon to be added to the portfolio.<\/p>\n

The Cadillac is one of the PGA Tour’s Signature Events, and this is the second of these tournaments that McIlroy will miss in quick succession. He skipped the RBC Heritage last week, and the Tour used to fine players for missing these competitions<\/a>, but he will no longer face sanction.<\/p>\n

McIlroy skipped several of these events in 2025 and gave his reasoning to The Guardian<\/a>. He said: “You look at what Justin Rose has done.<\/p>\n

“He is still competitive at 45 and I would like to think if I do the right things, pace myself and play the schedule that suits, not playing a ton of golf to stop me being burnt out every year, that I can get to that point as well. It’s a little bit more relaxed.<\/p>\n

“I feel like I have done a really good job over the last five or six years of not living and dying by every shot or round. I don’t want to say the tour stuff is ‘less important’.<\/p>\n

“But at the same time if I have 10 years left and I really want to prioritise the majors then the other tournaments are great to play in, you want to win them.
