{"id":552664,"date":"2026-04-27T03:47:09","date_gmt":"2026-04-27T03:47:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/552664\/"},"modified":"2026-04-27T03:47:09","modified_gmt":"2026-04-27T03:47:09","slug":"st-ives-exhibition-to-celebrate-life-of-much-loved-artist","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/552664\/","title":{"rendered":"St Ives exhibition to celebrate life of much-loved artist"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n  Porthminster Gallery in St Ives will host Joan Gillchrest: A Passion for Penwith and its People from August 8 to September 26, featuring a wide selection of Gillchrest\u2019s distinctive oil paintings.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Gillchrest, who died in 2008, was known for her na\u00efve depictions of Cornish life in towns such as Newlyn, Mousehole, and St Ives.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Her work often captured fishing boats, harbours, and the characters of the coastal communities she loved.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  A gallery spokesman said: &#8220;All works in the exhibition are for sale, with prices ranging from \u00a31,900 to \u00a34,900 for framed paintings by Joan Gillchrest, and \u00a350 to \u00a3400 for ceramics by Anne Barrell.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  &#8220;The Own Art 0% APR purchase plan is available on all works in the show.&#8221;\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Gillchrest\u2019s work was heavily influenced by the St Ives School, notably artists such as Alfred Wallis, Christopher Wood, and Bryan Pearce.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The exhibition will also include a curated selection of works by Bryan Pearce, as well as newly hand-painted ceramics by Anne Barrell.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  This showcase will run throughout the St Ives September Festival, adding to the town\u2019s artistic celebrations.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Born Joan Linda Gilbert Scott in 1918, Gillchrest studied at the Grosvenor School of Art from 1935 to 1939.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  She exhibited at the Royal Academy, the New English Art Club, and the London Group.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  During the Second World War, she volunteered as an ambulance driver with Westminster Hospital.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Gillchrest moved to Mousehole in 1958, where she focused on painting the Cornish landscape and its people.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Her first solo exhibition was held at Plymouth Art Gallery in 1969.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  She continued to show her work in galleries across the UK until her passing in 2008.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Porthminster Gallery has gained a strong reputation over the past 18 years for its exhibitions and changing stock of 20th Century Modern St Ives and British Art.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The gallery is open Monday to Friday from 10am to 5pm.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  It is located at 22 Fore Street, St Ives, near the Barbara Hepworth Studio and Garden.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Admission is free, and visitors can purchase artwork through the gallery\u2019s interest-free payment scheme.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Porthminster Gallery in St Ives will host Joan Gillchrest: A Passion for Penwith and its People from August&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":552665,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[31],"tags":[6225,6485,6486,1120,96,56,54,55],"class_list":{"0":"post-552664","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-arts-and-design","8":"tag-arts","9":"tag-arts-and-design","10":"tag-artsanddesign","11":"tag-design","12":"tag-entertainment","13":"tag-uk","14":"tag-united-kingdom","15":"tag-unitedkingdom"},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/552664","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=552664"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/552664\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/552665"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=552664"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=552664"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=552664"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
